1946 Ford V8 four-door sedan.

Firstly I am very grateful to Herb for sending me a number of photos to use on the site, all taken while he lived in South Africa. This page features a well-weathered 1946 (or early 1947) V8 Ford saloon, registration TJ 92303, in four-door sedan guise. Perhaps the photograph was taken after the rally, as the Ford is particularly muddy. Note the entrant's number plate attached to the car's front bumper, and the auxiliary lamps fitted also. The small lamps fitted above the grille identify this as a 1946 model-year car, although Herb's notes suggest that it was bought in 1947. The "Super Deluxe" badge script can just be seen, below the nearside headlamp.

Revised front end trim differentiated the '46 Ford from the previous version introduced in 1942, although cosmetics aside there was little to separate the two underneath the car's exterior. Power came courtesy of a 239 cu inch V8 engine, that previously had seen duty under the bonnets of Ford trucks and Mercury automobiles. Buyers could also opt for a straight-6 engined version if they preferred, with cars available in either Deluxe, or Super Deluxe trim. If going topless was your preferred way of traversing the highways, then the convertible Ford Sportsman of 1946 with its power windows and hood would probably have been the car to go for. Family buyers looking to buy a more practical mode of conveyance may well have been tempted by the "woodie" Station Wagon instead.
