Such a waste of a life! I think this goes to show that you must get out of your car if you do break down, whatever the weather...

Couldn't agree more, there's a mention of that article here:

I drive a truck for a living and I see near misses everyday with cars parked up on the hard shoulder...
Think about it? There is only a white line between you and the parked car. One little wobble and you're on your way to hitting it.... Confused

In this day and age it is not worth your life to be close to your car. Jump over the fence or barrier and see what happens. If you have a classic car , drive it on the B roads, not the motor ways . It might take a little bit longer but you have a better chance of getting home alive.

Absolutely agree and this also helps with public relations when you drive a reall wheezer of an oldie like I do. Holding up the traffic tends to tempt other drivers into taking foolish risks themselves.

I do find it quite alarming some of the things people will do just to get past an old (slower) vehicle!

Last weekend (Drive it Day) we took our cars on a little run, sticking to the back roads.
Then down one fairly narrow lane with lots of hidden junctions etc, there suddenly appeared at great speed, a modern Land-Rover which tailgated the last car in our line, then overtook the first couple of our cars, cut in causing the next car to brake then swerved out to overtake the rest of us in one go!!!!!
Complete P##K !

I was with my brother in law last night, and mentioned this topic as he drives HGV's for a living. He was telling me the annual insurance premium his firm pays is £27,000 per truck Shocked I have no idea if that is typical, but if it is, it gives you some scale of the cost of the damage insurance companies expect to be forking out for damage caused by HGV's !

Yes. Must say when driving my A40 to events, I had a lot of modern cars cut me up and shaking a fist at me.

I was driving in Derby when about to turn left with the trafficator out (Daytime though) the young guy behind me in a van was screaming and shouting "Why don't you indicate. Very Happy

I work in Derby but I would never now rely solely on trafficators anywhere though I have still got them on our P2 I have fitted flashers and a highlevel brake light - both very discrete and only noticed when lit up.

Its really impatience and inconsiderate driving generally and envy perhaps with classics that is the real problem

I know hindsight is a good thing but if my car had started to play up on that dual carriageway I would have driven onto the grass verge, and suffered getting off later on..

It looks like the car was on the road and got hit up the rear.

There seems to also be a slip road where the lorry is parked a bit further on.

I have slipped the car into neutral before now and coasted along into a layby or slip road if there was no grass verge, its surprising how far the car will roll with momentum
