Larry,
Is it an original equipment or an aftermarket. The Smith type uses the coil feed wire from the ignition switch. At the rev counter there is a 'U' shaped piece with the wire looped once around. As the contacts open and close it generates a small magnetic field in this 'U' piece. If yours is this type check that there is an air gap between the poles (the sides of the 'U').
