Ok so hears a fun puzzle to work out, I've had her going three times and she seems to start all good from the crank handle after two or three swings. The last time I had her running was Wednesday a week and a half ago so I thought I better take her for a spin this weekend to keep everything running smoothly.
She won't start the battery is charged, the petrol has been replaced and is getting to the carb ok, the plugs appear all ok, and if I'm lucky she will fire just the once the first time I crank her but that's it!! Have tried four times this weekend and am getting nowhere. Any ideals what could be wrong??
Cheers Matt

Is fuel getting to the plugs, not just the carb?

And is there a consistent spark at the plugs when you spin it over, ignition on?

Thanks guys i think the problems just that the disy contacts are pitted so the sparks not jumping across strong enough. She will still tow start so im wanting to just get that sorted and i recon we will be running all good.
If you know anything about reconditioning distributors please jump over to this link and give me some addvice: http://www.oldclassiccar.co.uk/forum/phpbb/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=102467#102467

If an ignition system is a bit 'tired' then sometimes although the car will start on the handle or with a tow it wont on the starter.
It seems as though the starter robs the ignition circuit of enough juice that it then can't perform correctly.
On the fuel side, putting a drop of fuel in each pot (not so much that it wets the plugs or cylnder walls) will sometimes encourage an engine to fire up especially if it has stood some while.

In my experience with the Morris Eight, which is almost 30 years, the rich mixture device (choke) of the SU carb does not really provide sufficient extra richness for starting in difficult conditions, such as low ambient temperature or after standing for a long time. Have you tried tickling the carburettor? Raising the fuel level by holding down the brass button for, say, six clicks of the fuel pump enables the engine to fire much sooner.

Needless to say, the ignition system must also be functioning properly and the timing be set correctly (TDC static).
