A Ford Escort Mk 2 1600 Sport was the first new car I bought. LFF 412R and I even remember the chassis number : BBATSY35603.
Mine was in Venetian Red and a 2 door but I seem to remember that a 4 door was available towards the end of production, 1978/79 on, but, I am open to correction.
Certainly the 1300 Sport was only available in 2 door only.
The 1600 Sport I owned was initially a very good car and economical - 40mpg + - but it started diluting it's engine oil with petrol after 8k miles or so. I took it back several times to the dealer but they never really cured it.
The carb was Ford's own version of a Webber twin choke called "Twin Venturi" but it had an automatic choke and the petrol diluting oil problem lay with that. Many owners of Fords of that period encountered similar problems.
Have you checked how much Mark2 Ford Escort 1600 Sports are worth these days? You may be in for a pleasant surprise. _________________ Starting Handle Expert

Good grief!
The Mk2 Escort 1600 Sport may have been a good car but it wasn't that special, surely?
The engine was straight from the Mk1 Escort Mexico, slightly stiffened suspension, a rev. counter, deck chair striped upholstery, two driving lamps, steel "sports" 5J wheels and some side graphics and that was about it.
An RS badge would have added more kudos. _________________ Starting Handle Expert

Very nice indeed.
Looking at the Ford badge on the grille, your example must be an early one - 1975/1976 because the grille badge was changed to the traditional Ford oval badge in early 1977 on British spec. cars at least.
On the UK spec. cars the "1.6" emblem on the front wings was satin black _________________ Starting Handle Expert

Looking at this brings back pleasant memories, I purchased a Ford RS Mexico in 1975 from Hooleys on Derby road in Nottingham. I was running at the same time a Mk 1 Mexico, type 49 shell for those that recognise the shell type. As time went by the RS Mexico was upgraded with a 2 litre Pinto replacing the 1600 Pinto, and a slippy diff fitted. Bilsteins on the front and rear, a Janspeed exhaust and the 3litre V6 capri carb that opened simultaneously instead of progressively. A run then to Pode Hole just outside Spalding to a rolling road, where the engineer specialised in Lotus, and was an expert in jetting and tuning. Fond memories. _________________ KA
