Hi all,
Im a new member living in British Columbia, Canada.
I'm originally from Northumberland but moved here a few years ago. I have a '62 TR4, a '60 frogeye sprite and have recently acquired a '47 austin ten.
The ten is in rough condition but has little rust. The interior needs work and the engine is seized.
Any suggestions of where to get engine parts for this car? I'm going to need pistons and bearings at least.

Regards

Paul

Hi Paul,

Welcome to the site, I had a GS1 Austin Ten a while ago and one or two other forum-ers have 8s or 10s also.

Do you have any photos of the car?

The Austin Counties Car Club caters for owners of 8s and 10s, in addition to the usual suspects, so it may be worth joining them. You're lucky if there's no bad rot in the bodywork! Smile

Cheers Rick,

There is a little rust, two small holes in the boot floor. It'll take a couple,of hours to fabricate a patch panel and weld them in!

I have pics but I'm not sure how to post them yet.

So the 'usual' suspects? Is there a list anywhere? I've found FW Thornton, but they seem expensive.

Set up a few "watches" on eBay if you use it, you'll probably find something on there once you know what sizes of bearings, pistons etc you need.

Autojumbles/swapmeets might turn up something, although not being in the UK might be a problem with that approach.

It'd be worth reading up to see what, if any, engine parts are shared with the previous Austin 10 Cambridge too, and also the contemporary 8 as I'm sure some parts will be interchangeable.

Bruce, with the Somersets in the other thread (username Brucekoukalaka), may have some tips as he's also in Canada.

Thanks for the mention. First welcome to the group Paul and I will keep an eye open for parts you will require. I do own 3 1952-'54 A40 Somersets and will be picking up a 1933 Morris 10 in the spring. however the engine in it has recently been overhauled so it runs Very Happy Here in Alberta there are a few old 10s but I would have to find out which parts you will be requiring. PM me and I'll help you out with some information. or eMail me at bruceclarke96@gmail.com

Hi
The Austin Ten Drivers Club, although UK based, has various overseas members.
Although the GSI is only just within the range supported, they would probably help out. They have a good website if you Google them, and would probably be able to advise on spares.
The GSI is quite a rare bird, civilian production being interrupted by the war and only surviving until 1947, when the A40 took over. There may be some commonality there also and so a chat with their owners club might be helpful.

Thanks chaps.

I'll set up a search on eBay. I need +60 thou pistons and standard bearings, a gasket set and all the water hoses. I've emailed a couple of companies in the UK to see if they have the bits.

Bruce, I'll send you an email.
Where in Alberta are you? In September me and a mate are running a classic car run called "Brits in the Sticks" in Salmon Arm. Lots of cars coming from Calgary and the larger Alberta area. Run is free and fun!

Paul, the ATDC will be able to help to a certain extent; but you have to join to get the spares. There isn't much compatibility post 1939 as far as I know( I have a '35).
I'm pretty sure the engine bearings are different, the head gasket is the same as post 1938 tens and many of the other gaskets can't be much different. The bore must surely be the same and I will check as I may have a set of +60s.
Mechanically they are very sturdy cars so you shouldn't need to completely rebuild msny things.
I'll look out my ATDC parts list and see what I find.

On closer inspection the bearings are fine so if I can find a set of pistons, gaskets and set of water hoses I'll have it running in now time.
Colwyn if you haves a set of pistons let me know and i@@ definitely be interested!
I'm also going to Emil's the Austin ten club to see what they have.

There is some commonality and some of the later parts such as the alloy head can be retrofitted to the earlier models, from what I can gather. Main changes, apart from the semi unitary construction are in things like suspension. If you can pick up Staton Abbey's little manual for the Austin 10, there is a lot of useful stuff in there. Try Ebay, or Amazon.

There area couple of UK specialists that may be able to help.

Alderton Austin Services are one:
www.aldertonaustinservices.co.uk

and Available Austins, who for some strange reason have no website, but can be reached at

Station Road
Arley
Coventry
West Midlands
CV7 8FG
01676 541 276
Fax: 01676 542 066

Hope this helps.

Thanks.
I'll try Available Austins.
I've received an email from Alderton saying he has the parts but he's not answered any of my messages asking how much they are!

Paul. A.A. is run by Bob Glenister who is very knowledgeable but I think is mainly into the earlier Tens and bigger HPs. I think he is slightly winding down the operation and moving on to other things so now might be a good time if he does have anything.

I am amazed you got a reply from Alderton because I have tried many times by email and phone with no response. The list if bits looks impressive but i don't know if it's backed up in fact.

Ebay does come up with things all the time but getting quite pricey.

Does yours have the aluminium head with oval water holes?

I've bought stuff from Alderton, Uj's gaskets, valves and a pair of the elusive and expensive rear wheel bearings. I have always ordered by telephone and found them quite efficient and friendly.
I think that you are right about Bob Glenister. hopefully someone will take up in his stead. If you are looking for engine and other mechanical parts, then there are various other specialists around who are sometimes cheaper than these guys, possibly because they are suppliers to them also. If you can give me a list of the sort of bits generically that you are looking for, then I will see if I can give you any recommendations.

Thanks chaps.
