Hi All,
Have come across a Jaquar 3.8s (1963/64) locked up in a Garage, do not know the car and the possible issues so well could someone share previous experience. The car looks good the interior is good but hasn't run for some time now.
Mono body and shell i need to check the front wings and jacking points for issues.
Any idea what a reasonable offer would be?

I am a huge fan of the S Type having restored one to concours... I had it for 14 yrs..
That's a bit of a how long is a piece of string for many reasons.
The S Type was always the forgotten jaguar so the prices were lower in comparison to the Mk11 (Personally I think it was a better car by far) I owned a Mk11 for 8 years too...

Africa prices?
In the UK in bad condition they can fetch 2k, in good condition @10k in concours or A1 @20k
Is it 3.8 manual or auto? Original Manual with OverDrive cars fetch a premium.
The rear suspension was about the same as the XJs as the S Type was really a test bed for them.. All the mounting points need checking of this.

Engine wise they are pretty robust but suffered from internal water way corrosion so a head off look would be necessary.

Interiors are expensive to replace so make sure its all there.

A lot depends on what you want from it, are you happy to run it as is or are you looking to restore?

Hi,
Thanks for the feedback. I am going still this week or the weekend to have a good look. I understand it to have one owner (Farther passed it down to kids in the Testament) The Car looks like it is in very good condition inside and out but a crawl underneath will be required along with the Engine Unknows.

And then they addressed the unfinished front end styling and gave us the Jaguar 420 which was a better styled car than the S Type.



I have one. A Daimler Sovereign manual overdrive version, performs excellently.

You say the S Type was the underdog to the MK 2, then the 420 was in the naughty corner, and only popular for spare parts when needing some restoration work carried out, to improve the MK2 or S Type, until just recently.

People just did not want to spend Jaguar MK money restoring them.....now they do.


Try and find an excellent manual overdrive example .!!!

Good luck with your Jaguar S Type.

Remember to go all over the bodywork with a fine tooth comb investigating any rust issues.
When you find any double the time you think it may take to eradicate it.

The interiors can cost a fortune to restore if in a very bad way.

Mechanical issues are the easy part of the restoration.

Remember to drop out that rear axle and go through it properly, they are a nightmare to work on when fitted to the car.

I did like both the 420s but I much preferred the styling of the S'Type..

Hi,
I went out to see the car, the car has been standing for 20-30 years i am lead to believe but it will start up first time i am told! No battery to test this at the time.
The complete Exhaust system would be required to be replaced.
New front and back windscreens as they are both black due to the internal plastic.
Complete new Shock system and rubbers required.
Complete new panel rubbers doors/boot etc.
The Brakes are all locked up so new rubbers and some engineering.
The car is on blocks so i couldn't take it for a drive so no idea what the gearbox and diff were like.
Besides the above the interior was perfect the car is neat and tidy the body is straight and the paint is faded. All the parts are there.
So the family wanted a price good enough for a running car so i went in low as the risks were to high and i haven't heard from them!

If you do go back to start it, do not attempt to use the petrol in the tank if it has also sat for years. It will cause all manner of problems if you do.
