OK...this is baffling me big time. Alvis TA14.....gearbox is lovely when it's cold.....drops into gear...everything is dandy. After about 10-15 minutes of driving it becomes a total pain and often refuses to go into third ( I'm double declutching as a matter of course ). Sometimes it won't go into first or second either making traffic lights a bloody nightmare. It'll go in eventually but often only after switching off ) Here's the weird bit though......once it's been running for a while and everything is hot...the damn thing is perfect again and is a pleasure to drive...what's that all about.???

It's got fresh oil of the correct type as recommended by Classic Oils of Aylesbury

ER...no, I don't think so....certainly it's particularly reluctant to go 2nd to 3rd when warm. But I think the answer is no.....what was your thinking?

Only that a dragging clutch is more evident when going down the box.

Dragging clutch gets my vote too.

Why would that be more evident on warm as opposed to cold or hot box ( or clutch)...and.....what can be done?

Sometimes reasons are not logical and good drinking time can be wasted in the thought process.

I have no idea if the clutch is adjustable, but if so, give it a try. Even at the horrific suggestion of risking a bit of clutch slip during testing, at least the clutch not releasing theory may be proved and help direct one's activities in the right direction.

Hows about:- The clutch plate will expand/thicken due to the drag (warm) and then fade will set in when it's hot which has the effect of reducing the drag.

Hello, a wee bit more diagnosis is possible and will help. When you have your problem starting from rest as at lights, what happens if you try to engage reverse?
At the time when engagement is poor, turn off the motor and try all the gears.
If you stop the motor with first engaged and the clutch depressed, it should slip in and out of first easily after the motor has stopped.
Is it a column shift? If so, is there a mechanical interlock in the linkage?

John

I'm sorry I'm unable to help, the only problem I've had with my TA14 was that I couldn't get any gears......that turned out to be the clutch sticking.

Solved....synchro clearly worn, switched to a heavier than original oil. Got Penrite 90 from Classic Oils of Aylesbury ( Bloke called Guy, very helpful )

Anyway, it's absolutely fine now
