hello
we have recently brought a 1973 commer lambourne horse box based on a vc4 with the intention of converting it to a camper/motorhome.
the problem i'm having is that the brake pedal is stuck down it seems not to be ceased on the pivot.
as when i lever it from the underneath it moves a bit I'm thinking the problem is with whatever the cylinder is attached to the pedal...

Does anybody know of a good website for air assisted brakes
as this is all a bit new to me!

Many of these systems were made by Clayton Dewandre of Lincoln. Usually the thing attached to the pedal is an air valve, with the air over hydraulic unit positioned somewhere on the chassis. I have no idea if Commer used them but a Google search for Clayton may give you an idea what you are up against.

My 1950 Commer has the Clayton Dewandre air/hydraulic system. The unit is positioned on the chassis and is operated by a thick rod from the pedal that pushes the plunger in or out. On the top of the unit is the master cylinder and linked to the back is a large air pipe that comes off the engine manifold.

My pedal was seized in the off position and when I traced it back I found that the pivot directly infront of the brake unit on the chassis had seized. Soaked it in oil, a bit of heat and some careful 'tapping' with a heavy hammer got it free.

I do have the manuals / supplements for the later V and C type Commers, I will find them out.

Thanks for the replies..

I am pretty sure my pedal pivot is free as when I lever the rod the pedal moves about half an inch or so

I did soak it in oil last week when i was last under there so when i get a chance I will investigate a little more Smile

I'm still on the look out for a service manual fingers crossed one will turn up

Just looked through my manuals, i have one showing the hydrovac brakes. I could photocopy the section if you like? I thought i had another box with them in so will keep looking. You say its a VC4 so two-stroke not Perkins then?

Yes please if you could photocopy it or even scan it then that would be ace

it's a perkins motor in it not a two stroke

the chassis number has vc4 in it so based on that and one other chap who seemed to know his stuff said it was a vc 4

Hi Chewie,

Really Sorry for not getting back to you sooner.

Instead of scanning I thought this might be easier for you, click on the link and you can download sections of manuals relevant to your Commer.

Hope this helps!

Trouble is there aren't a lot of websites for commercials, that's the best one for Commers as it contains so much information on all models.
