Hi Everyone
It would be interesting to know how many Austin 10 owners are on the forum. I see that mention of them (the cars, that is) is made quite often.

Welcome aboard, once upon a time I had a chrome-rad 10/4 but no longer. Which model do you have?

Hi there, welcome to the forum. Mine is a '37, quite presentable, having been the subject of an older restoration which is holding up quite well, albeit the upholstery is on that threshold between patinated and worn out! I have owned it for about five years.
It is a nice car to drive, if a trifle narrow for two substantial front seat occupants.
I have made a few discreet modifications, it has a Boyer Bransden Electronic ignition set up and flashing indicators, fronts are concealed in the sidelight units, the rear are motorcycle type pods mounted on the bumper brackets.
They work together with the semaphores, off the original steering wheel switch. The car has been quite reliable for most of my ownership, with a set of front wheel bearings needed for an MOT and a few other fairly minor tweaks. The one exception was a blown head gasket last Christmas, but that was quite quickly sorted.
Thinking of wheel bearings, if your restoration hasn't replaced them already, I advise you to start hunting for a set of rears. They are to a unique pattern and are almost unobtainable, and when they do come onto the market are at a substantial price.
I am a member of the ATDC and have found their spares service useful, and their technical support very good also. However, the club is fairly south-centric and since I live well 'up north' this therefore, tends to preclude my personal involvement in many club activities.

What a great post- thank you. I like the user name. Thank you for the good advice about rear hub bearings. I see one bearing on Ebay for a 10/4 (same thing?) going for £90 ! One time I was restoring an old tractor for which hub bearings were no longer available. I managed to get the hub etc machined so that it took a bearing from a ford escort. I take it this is impossible with a 10?

The front wheel outer bearings, on a Volvo Amazon are very small.
They are also tapered (split) so they dont have a fixed mesurement they need to be fixed to.

Maybe you guys can use them ? with a bit of machining.

It is difficult to explain without a diagram, but this is impossible. The inner race sits on the end of the axle tube, and the half shaft fits into a hub that contains the outer race. The inner race is wider than the outer to prevent wobble, and the bearing inner slides to a small degree on the axle tube to allow a modicum of movement.
It is possible, but expensive to have the bearing rebuilt, but better and quicker to replace this (and the seal ) with new. New seals are available, incidentally.
