For perhaps the third time since I sold it way way back, my old 2.5 Spitfire (albeit now with weedy 1500cc power unit) appears online for sale.

Do you ever get tempted to re-purchase old cars that you've owned in the past?

If it still had its big engine, I'd be half tempted to buy this one back again. As it is now though, it's a shadow (to me) of its former self Smile

Hi Rick,

Did the construction/engine location differ much from the GT6?

I especially remember the stub axle failures were a feature of the Herald front end, this being even more fragile when used in my Ginetta that had the near side stub drilled axially in order to derive a speedo drive!

Yes, the engine was getting on for 12" - 13" further back in the chassis. This required the bulkhead to be cut back, the inner edges of the chassis where it narrows to be re-profiled, prop shortened, gearlever extension shortened and so on. Plus, at the back a Rotoflex (GT6 Mk2/early Mk3) back end had been fitted. Basically, the "normal" engine mounts pick up on the forward end of the suspension towers. On this one, they bolted to the back of the same towers.

I bought it part-done, then finished it off. If it was still running this spec, I'd be sorely tempted to buy it back.

Having the engine set right back, combined with the Roto back end, meant that it handled brilliantly, very different to the standard Mk3 I had previously.

If this is a picture of a GT6 then your engine was mounted substantially further back. SUs instead of Strombergs noted.
