I don't spose anyone has a refurb'd starter motor lying around for an A40 Devon/Somerset do they?? mine is still playing up and I just want it working again - the handle is ok (I was out in it today although only needed the handle once fortunately) but electric starting is a little easier Very Happy

Hi Rick
Whats wrong with it? there is not much to go wrong in them, I do have some NOS armatures for Lucas starter motors, if its not the brushes its usually a short in one of the armatures coils, symtoms being it will work sometimes but not others depending on where the armatures has stopped.

I have growler somewhere if you want to borrow it.

Hi, have you checked for any sign of rubbing on the armature, the last couple of mine that went down were caused by worn bushes, they are not always easy to see but what happens is: power is applied and the armature is instantly attracted to the poles and jams up, it is very rare for the windings to fail as they are very beefy and designed to handle large currents. eliminate the mechanical side first.
Having said that, you have probably checked these things already.

ps . A growler ised to be used to check for shorted turns in generator and dynamo windings, with the improvement in insulation and the throw-away mentality these days I doubt if many modern motor mechanics will have heard of them.
Sorry, just spotted the link, so you know already?
