GOODWOOD REVIVAL TO STAGE EXCLUSIVE FERRARI-ONLY CONTEST FOR LAVANT CUP

This year’s Goodwood Revival, on September 11-13, will pay tribute to the great Ferrari racing sports cars of the 1950s by staging a special race exclusively for drum-braked machines from the iconic Maranello manufacturer.

The Lavant Cup, which was held exclusively for Jaguar D-Types in 2014, will sing to the sound of an Italian opera as some of the most beautiful machines ever adorned by the Prancing Horse badge race for victory, driven by a number of the world’s top historic racers.

Enzo Ferrari’s machines achieved phenomenal success in international motor sport during the 1950s, taking five World Sportscar Championship titles, and scoring victories in all the classic races, including Le Mans, Mille Miglia, Targa Florio, Carrera Panamericana, Sebring, Nurburgring and Spa.

Among the drivers who achieved these incredible successes were Formula 1 World Champions Alberto Ascari, Giuseppe Farina, Juan Manuel Fangio and Phil Hill, grand prix winners Peter Collins, Dan Gurney, and Froilan Gonzalez, and sports car legends Olivier Gendebien and Clemente Biondetti.

The Lavant Cup is set to feature such iconic machinery as the 166MM, an example of which took Ferrari’s maiden Le Mans triumph in 1949 in the hands of Luigi Chinetti and Lord Selsdon, the 340MM, 375MM and 750 Monza, all of which were instrumental in establishing Ferrari as the most successful sports car marque of the decade.

Various iterations of the 250 Testa Rossa, which was taken to victory three times in four years from 1958-61 by, among others, Hill and Gendebien, are also expected at the 18th running of the world’s greatest historic motor racing and vintage culture festival.

GOODWOOD REVIVAL TO CELEBRATE 50th ANNIVERSARY OF SHELBY DAYTONA COUPE’S WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP.

This year’s Goodwood Revival will mark the 50th anniversary of one of the most iconic GT racing cars of the 1960s – the Shelby Daytona Coupe – with a never-before-seen collection of the V8 racers at the 11-13 September event.

Only six examples of the Daytona Coupe were ever produced; its acquired name a reference to the car’s debut at the Daytona Continental in 1964, at which its drivers Dave MacDonald and Bob Holbert caused a sensation by securing pole position and leading the first third of the race.

For the first time in history the cars will come together at Goodwood to take part in a special demonstration run on each day of the Revival, along with a selection of other significant original Shelby Cobras. At least two of the Daytona machines will race in the Revival’s showpiece race – the RAC Tourist Trophy Celebration – on the Sunday of the event.

Based originally on the British AC-Bristol, the Cobra came into being after American Carroll Shelby – winner of the 1959 Le Mans 24 Hours – began fitting Ford V8 engines and strengthened gearboxes to re-bodied machines from the Thames Ditton-based constructor.

Renowned designer Peter Brock came up with an ultra-aerodynamic body ideal for high top speeds and the Daytona Coupe was born, to be raced by superstar drivers of the era like Dan Gurney, Phil Hill and Chris Amon in the World Championship, which was held for closed-top GT cars during the period.

After a Le Mans class win in 1964, a dominant campaign in World Sportscars in ’65 ensured that Shelby became the first American marque to take the title with numerous class wins from the car, including at Daytona, Sebring, Le Mans and the Nurburgring, with programmes run by Shelby International itself, Alan Mann Racing and – on one occasion – Scuderia Filipinetti.

All the Cobras will be housed in a special area within the main paddock, which will be dressed to resemble the pitlane of the 1965 Sebring 12 Hours for this very special celebration in September. It is sure to be a highlight for the event’s 150,000 visitors to the Revival.

GOODWOOD REVIVAL TO CELEBRATE THE ICONIC LAND ROVER

The Goodwood Revival will celebrate 67 years of Land Rover production on September 11-13 with a huge gathering of early versions of the iconic British all-wheel-drive vehicle and some of the latest Defenders to roll off the production line.

More than 50 pre-1966 Series Land Rover models, charting the early days of the Land Rover, will take part in a track parade on each morning of this year’s Revival, and will be on static display on Lavant Bank for the rest of the event.

A host of special conversion body styles will be on view, including the Bright yellow 1950 Series I Bertam Mills Circus vehicle, designed to give the impression that Kam – the circus’s resident elephant – was driving the car!

Fire tenders, military conversions, prototypes, recovery vehicles, ambulances, Tickford conversions, mobile welders and even a tracked Cuthbertson 88” are all set to feature in what will be an incredible spectacle.

Additionally, 11 owners of pre-production Land Rovers will bring their vehicles, all of which descend from the famous pre-production vehicle number one, ‘HUE 166’, to Goodwood for what is believed to be the largest gathering of pre-production Land Rovers ever to be seen in motion.

The engineering bloodline that links the original Land Rover Series One with the 21st Century Defender will be celebrated with a special presentation on the Land Rover stand inside the Earls Court Motor Show building, capturing the birth of the legendary vehicle and its progress through the past seven decades as a model that has constantly defined the concept of ‘go-anywhere’ all-wheel drive engineering.

Land Rover will recreate key elements from the development of the original Series I, which made its UK public debut in 1948. This will include drawing board plans and an early pre-production chassis. A Series I model will be displayed titled at 45 degrees, demonstrating its capabilities while the latest Defender Autobiography, a model that incorporates contemporary design features within the robust qualities of the original, will also be displayed.

Bonhams, which will hold its annual Revival Sale on Saturday, 12 September at Goodwood, will display the Land Rover Defender 2,000,000, a unique version that has been specially built as a tribute to the model’s production heritage and its landmark of reaching two million production models at Solihull. The vehicle will be offered for sale at a charity auction hosted by Bonhams in December.

THEO PAPHITIS TO MAKE GOODWOOD REVIVAL RACE DEBUT.

Renowned businessman Theo Paphitis will trade his suit for a set of fireproof overalls on September 11-13 to make his debut at the Goodwood Revival.

One of the most recognisable businessmen in the UK, Paphitis is best known for appearing on the hit BBC Two show Dragons’ Den, and for taking Millwall Football Club out of administration and all the way to the FA Cup Final during his stint as chairman.

A string of business achievements include reviving the fortunes of notable high-street brands La Senza and Ryman Stationery, as well as setting up the Small Business Sunday initiative.

The self-confessed car lover, who joined forces with Formula 1 podium finisher Mark Blundell to become chairman of sports agency MB Partners in 2013, is now putting his skills to the test on the racetrack.

Having gained his racing licence during the winter, Paphitis has been racing a classic Ford Anglia this year, and has already finished on the podium. He will race the same car at Goodwood in the St Mary’s Trophy for 1960s production saloons.

His co-driver will be factory Toyota FIA World Endurance Championship driver Mike Conway, who will also be making his Revival debut.

Conway, 31, is a race winner in the two most prestigious championships outside of F1 – the WEC and the IndyCar Series – and has sprayed the victory champagne on some of the most famous and challenging circuits in the world, including Monaco, Long Beach and Macau.

Paphitis and Conway will be joined at the Revival by Blundell – himself a winner of the Le Mans 24 Hours and several IndyCar races during the 1990s. Blundell and his co-driver Kerry Michael will share a Ford Lotus Cortina in the St Mary’s Trophy – a two-part, two-driver race featuring a current or ex-professional driver in every car.

They join a strong list of drivers and riders already confirmed for the event, which includes Tom Kristensen, Richard Attwood, Jackie Oliver, Emanuele Pirro, Jochen Mass, Anthony Reid, Jason Plato, Andrew Jordan and Stuart Graham and will be bolstered by yet more big names in the coming weeks.

Theo Paphitis said: “I’m incredibly excited to be making my Goodwood Revival debut in September. I started racing this year purely with the Revival in mind as it’s such an incredible event at which Lord March makes sure everything is right, down to the tiniest of details. With Mike Conway as my team-mate, I think we can have a respectable finish, although that will be tough against the cream of historic racers – not least my business partner, Mark Blundell! I just don’t want to be saying ‘I’m out’ at any point of the race.”

GOODWOOD REVIVAL WELCOMES JD CLASSICS AS A MAIN EVENT SPONSOR.

Goodwood is pleased to announce JD Classics as a main sponsor of the 2015 Revival Meeting.

JD Classics, one of the world’s leading classic car restoration and historic racing companies, has a long and distinguished history at the Goodwood Revival. Thoroughbred racing cars prepared by the Maldon-based company have achieved numerous successes since the inaugural Revival in 1998.

In 2015, JD Classics will enter six cars into a number of races at the world’s largest historic motor racing and vintage culture festival.

A 1954 Cooper T33 will contest the two-driver Freddie March Memorial Trophy on Revival Friday while a 1963 Lightweight Jaguar E-type will take part in Sunday’s showpiece race, the RAC Tourist Trophy Celebration for early-1960s GT machines.

A pair of ex-period Goodwood race Jaguar XK120s have been entered into the Fordwater Trophy for production sports and GT cars of 1948-54 while the Sussex Trophy, which brings the curtain down on this year’s Revival, will feature JD Classics’ Lister Costin and Jaguar D-Type among a full grid of 1950s World Championship sports cars.

The event’s three official course cars; a 1962 Coombs Jaguar Mk2, a 1965 Aston Martin DB5 and a 1965 Ferrari 275 GTB Alloy will also be provided by JD Classics while a 1972 Ferrari 365 GTB ‘Daytona’ will be showcased inside the Earls Court Motor Show building as part of the ‘Seeing Red’ central concours that celebrates the Italian marque.

Derek Hood, JD Classics managing director, said: “The Goodwood Revival is a stand-out event of the classic motor racing calendar, and we couldn’t think of a better partnership for us. It’s an event we always enjoy competing in, and we’re looking forward to seeing our cars both on and off the track.”

GOODWOOD REVIVAL TO CELEBRATE 50 YEARS OF YOUTHQUAKE.

Next weekend’s Goodwood Revival will pay tribute to the fabled ‘Youthquake’ movement of 1965 as it reaches its 50th anniversary, with a series of celebrations centred around the explosion of ‘Swinging London’ culture into the USA, centred around the Miniskirt.

‘Youthquake’ was a phrase coined by then editor-in-chief of US Vogue magazine, Diana Vreeland, to mark the seismic shift in culture in New York when young people abandoned many of the traditions of older generations and injected fun into everyday life.

Buoyed by the success of Mary Quant’s shop, ‘Bazaar’ on London’s King’s Road, retailers Karl Rosen and Paul Young brought a number of designers – including Quant – to Manhattan to open a shop named Paraphernalia.

With social trend-setters Edie Sedgwick and Marisa Berenson helping add kudos to the styles of Paraphernalia by wearing the clothes of Quant and others, British fashion went a long way to shaping the way young women and men dressed over the next few years.

The Revival will mark the anniversary with a very special, 3D Billboard located next to the art deco-style Earls Court Motor Show building, featuring live models wearing some of the most stylish Miniskirt and Minidress designs of the period.

Visitors to the Revival will be encouraged to channel their inner Twiggy or Jean Shrimpton and take part in our annual ‘Best Dressed’ contest, which this year features a category for most iconic Miniskirt or Minidress on each day of the September 11-13 event.

Finalists will be selected throughout each day with a team of expert judges, including Men’s File editor Nick Clements and renowned designers Marion Foale and Sally Tuffin, picking the winners in several male and female categories on the Richmond Lawn at 1600 on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
