As you have put LWB wheels on with 7.50 16 tyres on the gearing has changed and ideally you should look for a Series 3 LWB (109) speedometer with a different calibration for an accurate speed reading. |
My lightweight on lwb rims never went fast enough to worry about such details

What is the difference in external diameter of the tyres? _________________ Bristols should always come in pairs.

Hi Ellis & Penman,
I read about the different speedos on here:
http://www.land-rover.org/category/gauges/
My speedo seems VERY inaccurate, it was before and after the change of wheels..... it seems to only read up to 30MPH.
I will verify this sometime in the next week by taking my Sat Nav for a short trip and compare speed readings ~ will let you know the outcome |

Hi
As most speedos over read by 2 to 3 MPH at around 30 they would probably have to be over 10% bigger to leave you travelling faster than indicated on a normally serviceable speedo. _________________ Bristols should always come in pairs.

Your speedo might be correct anyway - 7.50 tyres were optional on 88"s and were increasingly popular as the years went by. I have a feeling one is 1408 and the other 1536 TPM (the latter is for 6.00 tyres)
If it is reading very low it could be the cable. Mine only works intermittently due to a dead cable I still haven't replaced, but when it does, it reads way under! |

I'm looking at a Series 3 109" speedo head as I post this and the TPM figure is 1376.
On a Series 2 109" the figure is 1408.
Why the difference I wonder? _________________ Starting Handle Expert

I've seen that happen before When I was about 19 (so that's 1969) a group of guys and gals who went by the name of Fred Inc. hung out at the same café. The washed cars to make a bit of extra cash and they had a Landie. Only one had a full driving licence but the others drove it on provisionals which may have had a bearing on the gear lever breaking. It broke not far from my house and one of them came to see if I could help. I could see that it wasn't a roadside fix so I took the gearbox lid off and selected 3rd. gear to get it moving. I can't remember them getting it fixed though.
Two break in 45 years..... I see a pattern developing.

Thanks chaps, yes it's flush to the floor so I can see it's going to need some dismantling!

Ouch that was lucky you were at home Steve.
I suppose it's easier to buy a new one than try to weld it isn't it.
I remember when I was in the RAF it was quite common to see Land Rovers with metal collars welded to the bottom of the gear sticks.

Quite a common problem! Thankfully not one I have experienced!
Some later speedos were 1376 TPM and I don't know why they changed (the speedo drive probably changed too?) |

Started to look into this problem, the simplicity of the design is delightful,
but the years of crud and rust (chassis) is not...
