Hi all,

News as it comes through for the 2015 Classic will be added here.

---------------

TICKETS NOW ON SALE FOR SILVER ANNIVERSARY.

• Legendary rockers Status Quo top the 2015 live music bill
• World’s Biggest Classic Motor Racing Festival to celebrate 25 years
• New races join fans’ favourites on packed racing programme
• Special ‘Silver Sunday’ at Silverstone

With the award-winning Silverstone Classic celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2015, next summer’s ‘Rocking and Racing’ extravaganza will be the biggest and best yet.

Highlighting the special significance of this Silver Anniversary, it is announced today – as tickets go on sale – that legendary rockers Status Quo will top the live music line-up at the milestone 2015 Silverstone Classic (24-26 July).

As tradition now dictates, the World’s Biggest Classic Motor Racing Festival will also feature an unrivalled number of exciting and evocative races starring more than eight decades of glorious motor sport history. All the established favourites will return including Group C prototypes, Super Tourers, 90s GT Legends and the FIA Masters Historic F1 Championship alongside two eye-catching new grids to be revealed in the New Year.

Massive car club displays and record-breaking on-track parades have also become part of the Classic’s spiraling success – and will be again in 2015. The extravaganza’s third day has been aptly designated ‘Silver Sunday at Silverstone’ and all owners of silver cars – whether old or new – will be invited to join in the festivities.

To mark the occasion, a special Silver ticket type has been introduced which includes a special in-field parking area plus a sparkling Silver Jubilee cavalcade around the famous Grand Prix circuit.

“We want to paint Silverstone silver!” exclaimed Event Director, Nick Wigley. “The Classic just gets bigger and bigger every year but, even by those sky rocketing standards, next year is going to be something very, very special. We are really excited to have Status Quo pumping out their hits on Saturday evening and we have lots more fantastic plans to ensure we celebrate this amazing anniversary in fitting style.”

With an unprecedented 64 British hit singles, Status Quo are one of the UK’s best loved bands. Their first chart success came in 1968 and they are still going strong today having just performed an acclaimed acoustic concert for BBC Radio 2 at The Roundhouse in London.

Early Bird tickets are now available until 31 March and offer significant savings of up to 15 per cent. Adult prices start at just £34 and stick to the Classic’s widely praised ‘access all areas’ policy, thus providing admission to both race paddocks, trackside grandstands and the live music concerts.

Saturday tickets – including a full race programme and Status Quo – also offer exceptional value. They are currently on sale for £55 rising to £62 if purchased after the Early Bird offer expires. Additional discounts are available to members of registered car clubs displaying their classics on the in-field and, fittingly, owners of silver cars can join the special ‘Silver Sunday’ track parade and associated festive activities for only an extra £25.

As a number of OCC Forum-ers usually attend, more news about 2015 ...

SILVER JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS OPEN WITH SPECIAL SHOWCASE AT AUTOSPORT SHOW.

• 25th anniversary marked with huge historic racing display at the NEC
• Symbolic Group C Mercedes ‘Silver Arrows’ on pole position
• Line-up of supercar legends from the pages of Classic & Sports Car

Two of the leading names in the global classic car world are joining forces to provide visitors with a very special showcase at next month’s Autosport International show at the NEC, Birmingham (8-11 January).

Kicking off its Silver Jubilee celebrations, the Silverstone Classic is teaming up with Classic & Sports Car magazine to create a huge display. This will not only feature a dazzling collection of truly iconic racing and road cars from previous eras, but also representation from all the top series organisers responsible for ensuring the UK’s revered position right at the forefront of the thriving historic motor sport movement.

The set piece will put the spotlight on many of the stunning grids that have established the Silverstone Classic as the World’s Biggest Classic Motor Racing Festival as well as a number of the renowned supercars that are regularly acclaimed in the pages of the world’s best selling classic car magazine.

The dazzling 1990 ‘Silver Arrows’ Mercedes C11 sports prototype will take pole position among the eight competition cars gathered to mark the Classic’s 25th anniversary. Raced in period by the great Michael Schumacher, the fearsome twin-turbo Group C machine is always a real crowd-pleaser at Silverstone and, aptly, has been selected to symbolise the Silver Jubilee event.

Emphasising the unrivalled diversity of historic motor sport competing on the hallowed British Grand Prix circuit at the Classic, the other track cars on show range from a revered Jaguar D-type from the Fifties to more recent pin-ups such as the ex-James Thompson Honda Accord from the much-admired Super Touring generation which was a born-again winner in James Dodd’s hands at last summer’s event plus one of the amazing Lister Storm that took part in July’s dramatic 90s GT Legends demonstrations.

Stellar grids of Grand Prix cars from evocative golden eras are also among the regular crowd favourites and the special display in Birmingham will include both an eye-catching JPS Lotus 87 once raced by local hero Nigel Mansell and one of the very first rear-engined Cooper F1 creations from 1960. Two other wonderful powerhouses also from the Sixties will complete the outstanding line-up: a fabulous Lola T70 Spyder and a mighty 6.6-litre Corvette Stingray.

“What better way to kick off what’s going to be an amazing 25th anniversary year for the Silverstone Classic than with this magnificent show stopping display?” said Event Director, Nick Wigley. “We have already confirmed that Status Quo will be topping the live music line-up on Saturday evening and we have lots more exciting announcements to make in the coming months. Over the past 25 years the Silverstone Classic has flourished into the World’s Biggest Classic Motor Racing Festival and even by its own pace-setting standards, 2015 is going to be very, very special.”

Of course there’s so much more to the Silverstone Classic than record grids starring in excess of 1000 racing entries. Nowhere will visitors get to see so many dazzling cars representing the history of famous and legendary marques, all lovingly maintained and displayed by their owners. The sheer scale of these displays – some 10,000 cars in 2014 – is a landmark feature of the Silverstone Classic and a real celebration of motoring, auto design and memorabilia.

Highlighting this – and indeed the kind of stunning cars found every month on its pages – Classic & Sports Car has put together an equally impressive collection of ‘wow’ factor road cars for those at the NEC to savour. This mouth-watering gathering includes an Audi Sport Quattro SWB, Ferrari F40, Jaguar XJR15, Lancia Stratos Stradale and Porsche 959.

“We are delighted to be part of such a major milestone celebration for the Silverstone Classic,” said James Elliott, Classic & Sports Car Group Editor. “Back when it all started, Classic & Sports Car was the official media partner to the very first International Historic Festival staged at Silverstone in July 1990, and we are delighted to still be involved in a similar role today. In so many ways that groundbreaking first meeting dedicated entirely to providing enthusiasts with a feast of historic racing laid the foundations for the huge number of similarly focused events that are now held right around the world. It’s also intriguing to think that an increasing number of incredible cars now racing and parading around Silverstone are actually younger than the event itself. That’s clearly another significant factor in the growth both of historic motor sport and of the ever-expanding classic car scene.”

Early Bird tickets for next summer’s special Silver Jubilee Silverstone Classic are now available offering significant savings of up to 15 per cent. Adult prices start at just £34 and stick to the Classic’s widely praised ‘access all areas’ policy, thus providing admission to both race paddocks, trackside grandstands and the live music concerts.

Saturday tickets – including a full race programme and Status Quo – also offer exceptional value. They are currently on sale for £55 rising to £62 if purchased after the Early Bird offer expires at the end of March. Additional discounts are available to members of registered car clubs displaying their classics on the infield and, fittingly, owners of silver cars can join the special ‘Silver Sunday’ track parade and associated festive activities for only an extra £25.

VARIETY IS THE SPICE OF LIFE AT THE SILVER ANNIVERSAY CLASSIC

• Pre War Sports Cars add to the Silverstone Classic spectacle
• ‘Mad Jack’ and Chevron honoured with special races
• Popular HSCC Guards Trophy makes Classic debut
• HGPCA grids combined for huge GP car showpiece

Two exciting new races have joined the traditional favourites at this summer’s Silver Jubilee edition of the Silverstone Classic (24-26 July), thus ensuring the special 25th anniversary festival features the fullest possible spectrum of motor sport history.

The first sees the welcome return of the charismatic Pre War Sports Cars (top and below left column) while the second is a Classic debut for the popular Guards Trophy GT and Sports Racing Championship (bottom right column). Adding to the spectacle both races will run for 40 minutes with a mandatory pit stop and optional driver change.

The Pre War Sports Car grid was a regular entertainer in the event’s early years but hasn’t featured on the packed bill at the World’s Biggest Historic Motor Racing Festival since 2009. However, with organisers keen to highlight the long-running event’s glorious past – as well as provide visitors with even more motor sport history to savour – the grid rejoins under the evocative ‘Mad Jack’ banner.

Named in honour of Richard ‘Mad Jack’ Shuttleworth, winner of the first Grand Prix staged at a road circuit in the UK back in 1935, the Motor Racing Legends-run Mad Jack Pre War Sports Car race will be one of the major crowd pleasers on Saturday’s action-packed schedule.

It will also be the first time that the latest version of the Silverstone Grand Prix Circuit will host many of the most dramatic and entertaining sports cars from the pre-World War 2 era. These will include mighty 8-litre Bentleys, Type 35 Bugattis and Alfa 8C Monzas along with equally esteemed Aston Martins, Altas, Alvises, BMWs, Frazer Nashes, MGs, Talbots and Sunbeams.

“There are some other really interesting cars out there, too, that we are hoping to attract to Silverstone,” confirmed Duncan Wiltshire, Chairman of Motor Racing Legends. “These pre-War cars were always an integral part of the Classic and it’s fantastic that they will be back in what’s clearly going to be a memorable 25th birthday bash come July.”

Organised by the Historic Sports Car Club (HSCC), the Guards Trophy is the best-supported championship in historic racing. Now the championship for pre-1966 GT and pre-1969 sports-racing cars will get the highest profile race in its history when a capacity grid lines up on Sunday at the Classic.

“I’m delighted that we have been able to secure a slot at the Classic for the Guards Trophy,” said Grahame White, CEO of the HSCC. “This is a just reward for all the drivers who have supported the championship so well over the years.”

White has no doubts that the new race will attract an oversubscribed 58-car grid. “We regularly get 50 and 60-car entries and I’m sure there will be a very big demand for places at the Classic,” he admitted.

The capacity field typically includes Jaguar E-types, Lotus Elans, Ginetta G12s, Morgans and TVR Griffiths. A number of notable Chevron B6s and B8s are also regulars and their presence will be a fitting tribute to the distinguished racing marque founded by Derek Bennett in 1965 that is celebrating its 50th birthday this year.

“The presence of both Pre War Sports Cars and Guards Trophy grids will add yet more variety and colour to this year’s Classic,” enthused Nick Wigley, Event Director. “While sports racers from the Twenties and Thirties may not be among the fastest on show, they will certainly be among the most dazzling and dramatic – everyone loves to watch the drivers as they wrestle to control machines that are big on power and small on grip. We are also delighted to introduce the Guards Trophy to the Classic audience – with a massive 58-car entry, they will provide yet another dimension and yet more entertainment.”

These two additions to the frenetic Classic programme have partially been achieved by the amalgamation of the two Historic Grand Prix Cars Association fields into one massive grid. This will now showcase an incredible spectrum of Grand Prix racing history stretching from early Bugattis and ERAs of the Thirties right through to the game-changing rear-engined Brabhams, Coopers and Lotuses of the Sixties.

‘BATTLE OF BRITAIN’ RACES ADDED TO SILVERSTONE CLASSIC BILL

• 75th anniversary commemorated on track and in the air
• New iconic races for classic British GTs and saloons
• Final addition to the Classic’s most comprehensive line-up yet

Two evocative new races for much-loved British GT and saloons cars from the Fifties and Sixties have been added to this summer’s massive Silverstone Classic line-up (24-26 July).

Moreover, featuring grids packed with famous British-marques such as Aston Martin, Austin, Austin-Healey, Ford Cortina, Ginetta, Hillman, Jaguar, Lotus, MG, Mini, Marcos, Morgan, Morris, Riley, Sunbeam, Triumph, TVR and Wolseley, these two special showdowns will be staged under the illustrious ‘Battle of Britain’ banner.

The pair of 20-minute races will be notable highlights in the non-stop entertainment on both Saturday and Sunday and – commemorating the 75th anniversary of the 1940 air battle – they will be accompanied by alluring aerial displays by Spitfires and other Second World War aircraft.

Confirmation of this exciting new initiative for British-made GT and Touring cars manufactured between the start of 1947 and the end of 1965, completes the most comprehensive line-up of on-track action yet seen at the record-breaking Silverstone Classic. With 22 races ranging from Pre War Sports Cars from the Twenties and Thirties to Super Tourers and 90s GT Legends from the Nineties, this year’s 25th anniversary event will showcase more soul-stirring motor sport history than ever before.

“We are always looking for new grids to widen the Classic’s appeal and these ‘Battle of Britain’ races will do just that,” explained Nick Wigley, Event Director. “You only have to look at all the fabulous displays put on by car clubs at the Classic to know that the Fifties and Sixties were glory days for the British motor industry with brands such as Mini, MG and TR very much to the fore. Now we will have lots of these wonderful icons competing against each other in what are going to be hugely exciting, patriotic and crowd-pleasing encounters.”

The two new Battle of Britain races are being promoted by Masters Historic Racing, the leading organisation behind several of the other championships on the packed Classic bill including the always popular FIA Masters Historic Formula One and FIA Masters Historic Sports Cars grids.

“Everyone loves the Silverstone Classic and so we are expecting an over-subscribed full 58-car field for these unique ‘Battle of Britain’ races,” predicted Rachel Bailey, Masters Event Manager. “We’ve already had some really interesting enquiries and it’s clear that this new initiative will boast an amazing variety of cars as well as a very special feel due to its pure British entry. It’s going to be a remarkable homage to the period.”

Ensuring the entry embraces the fullest possible tribute to the era, six different classes are being welcomed ranging from nimble touring cars with sub-1300cc engines to mightier GT cars with engines over 3-litres. The results from Saturday’s race will set Sunday’s grid with class winners based on the combined classification of both races. It all adds up to another unmissable attraction at this summer’s Silver Jubilee festival.

Early Bird tickets for the 2015 Silverstone Classic are already on sale offering significant savings of up to 15 per cent. Adult prices start at just £34 and stick to the Classic’s widely praised ‘access all areas’ policy, thus providing admission to both race paddocks, trackside grandstands and the live music concerts which this year include chart-toppers Status Quo and Paul Young.

Aft'noon all, latest news re this year's Classic.....

-----

RECORDS ALREADY TUMBLING AS CLASSIC GEARS UP FOR 25th ANNIVERSARY PARTY.

• More than 100 car clubs registered for Silver Jubilee event
• Bike clubs also invited to join this summer’s birthday bash
• Early Bird ticket offer expires at the end of March

Firmly established as the World’s Biggest Classic Motor Racing Festival, this year’s special Silver Anniversary running of the Silverstone Classic (24-26 July) is already breaking new records. For the first time in the mammoth meeting’s glorious 25-year history, more than 100 car clubs will add to the high-octane atmosphere with huge displays creating a magical infield motor museum at the Home of British Motorsport.

Last year’s spectacular three-day extravaganza raised the bar by attracting an unprecedented 93 clubs, displaying in excess of 10,000 cherished classic cars right at the heart of the award-winning event. Those records have already been topped in 2015 with – to date – no fewer than 110 clubs signing up for money-saving Display Packages.

Moreover, as part of this summer’s birthday bash, bike clubs are also being offered the opportunity to take advantage of these fantastic deals that include two adult admission tickets plus an infield parking pass which allows members to display their car or bike on their registered club’s bespoke stand.

“These sparkling displays are a very important and integral part of our celebration of classic car culture and – like the event – with every year they grow and grow,” enthused Nick Wigley, Event Director. “The record number already registered shows the clubs are coming out in force this summer, once again providing everyone attending the Silverstone Classic with a wonderful spectacle.”

While the magical event will mark its own 25th anniversary in terrific style, as tradition dictates many of the car clubs will be paying homage to their own landmarks with eye-catching track parades on Friday and Saturday. Motoring milestones being honoured on the full Silverstone Grand Prix Circuit this year include 60 years of both the TVR Car Club and Aston Martin DB6, 50 years of the Rolls Royce Silver Shadow, 40 years of the Jaguar XJS and Triumph TR7, 30 years of the Sinclair C5 and Toyota MR2 as well as 25 years of two iconic Japanese sportscars: the ground-breaking Honda NSX mid-engined supercar and the equally evocative Mazda MX-5, which first reached the UK in 1990.

Although car club members have until the end of May to register, Early Bird tickets are currently on sale for visitors wanting to join the party atmosphere. These offer significant savings of up to 15 per cent if purchased before 1 April. Adult prices start at just £34 and stick to the Classic’s widely praised ‘access all areas’ policy, thus providing admission to both National and Wing race paddocks, trackside grandstands and the live music concerts which this year include chart-toppers Status Quo and Paul Young.

Morning all,

A very pleasant day was spent down at Silverstone yesterday, gaining an insight into the plans being laid for this year's Classic, celebrating its 25th anniversary this year.

Building on previous years' experiences, the line-up is as strong as ever with the event running for three days. Making a welcome return is a race purely for pre-war sportscars. Also new for 2015 is a high speed demonstration of F1 cars of the late 1980s through to the 2000s, so if the sound of current-day 1.6 turbos isn't really your thing, then V8s, V10s and V12s being extended around Silverstone's sweeping curves could well be just the tonic you need. No cars sounding like neurotic Dysons need apply Smile

Many many photographs were taken, in all 120 will be posted here, split into two batches. While they cannot capture the magnificent sounds and in some case smells of the cars being demonstrated, hopefully they'll give an indication of the sights that will be on offer this year.

Images 1-60 now follow:

More to follow ....

Latest update from the Classic's HQ:

----------------

SILVERSTONE TO SPARKLE WITH SILVER DREAM MACHINES

• Amazing array of cars for special 25th anniversary parade
• Nine decades of motoring history take to the track
• ‘Silver Sunday’ marks Classic’s quarter century in glittering style

Whether it’s rocking to Status Quo or revelling in the widest ever spectrum of motor sport history, this summer’s Silverstone Classic (24-26 July) will mark its 25th anniversary in glittering style.

The biggest celebration, though, will be the special Silver Jubilee parade – one of the many highlights on ‘Super Sunday’, which will see hundreds of silver cars taking to the famous Silverstone Grand Prix track.

The spectacular parade is open to everyone with a silver car – old or new – and has already attracted an amazing array ranging from a 1934 Austin Seven Special to the latest creations from legendary marques such as Land Rover and Aston Martin.

In-between, the silvery cavalcade will feature a magical mix putting the spotlight on at least nine decades of automotive history. As you’d expect at an event that showcases close to 10,000 privately-owned classic cars, the parade includes numerous iconic models from esteemed brands such as Alfa Romeo, BMW, Caterham, Ginetta, Jaguar, Lotus, Marcos, Mercedes, MG, Porsche and TVR.

However, the huge gathering also comprises a sizeable number of today’s mainstream models like Ford Fiestas, Honda Accords and Vauxhall Astras – all united by their sparkling silver bodywork and by owners not only keen to join the celebrations but also to take full advantage of this rare opportunity to savour a memorable lap on Silverstone’s hallowed asphalt.

“Right from the very first event in 1990, the Classic has always set out to commemorate important motoring anniversaries with track parades but this is something a little bit different,” explained event director Nick Wigley. “For once it’s not limited to those lucky enough to own an E-type, 911 or F40 – it’s open to all those millions of motorists who simply have a silver car. We want as many people as possible to participate in our 25-year celebrations and this is the perfect way to allow lots more to join the party.”

Perhaps the anniversary parade’s popularity is of no surprise: the Classic is expecting its first 100,000 attendance in July and almost 25 per cent of all licensed cars in the UK are silver-coloured. The DVLA’s latest vehicle statistics reveal that there are 7,250,300 silver cars on our roads – more than 440,000 of those alone being Mercedes models.

While the organisers are thrilled both by the huge numbers and by the notable variety of the striking silver machines already entered into the Silver Jubilee parade, it’s not too late for others to grasp the opportunity. It costs owners of silver cars just £25 – appropriately – on top of general admission tickets to be part of this milestone occasion. Moreover, they also benefit from parking in a special infield ‘Silver Zone’ and receive a special 25th anniversary car sticker.

While the track pageant will be a major attraction, it’s only one of the many mouth-watering ingredients that contribute to Silver Sunday at the Silverstone Classic. Other highlights include the popular RetroRun parade plus two of the festival’s most prestigious races: the Royal Automobile Club Tourist Trophy for Historic Cars for Pre ’63 GTs and the Royal Automobile Club Woodcote Trophy for Pre ’56 Sports Cars. The former features a wonderful grid of priceless E-type Jaguars and Ferraris; the latter is packed with Le Mans winning D-type Jaguars and Aston Martins.

As ever at the Classic, Sunday’s non-stop entertainment continues all over the massive venue – and, indeed, above it! TV personality Mike Brewer will host his car clinics live from the main stage, Caterham’s dramatic Drift Experience will spin its tyre-smoking wheels, the 40m giant wheel will offer panoramic views, the new Adrenaline Zone will wow the more adventurous, the Off-Road Zone will be in full swing and the purr of magical Merlin engines will resonate from a Spitfire and Hurricane air display.

Adult admission tickets for Sunday are priced at £52 (or £77 for the Silver Sunday ticket) and include booking fees, access to paddocks, grandstands and the vast majority of the numerous attractions. All tickets – including those for the Silver Sunday parade – must be purchased in advance.

More news regarding this year's Classic ....

----------------

UNFINISHED BUSINESS FOR TOURING CAR CHAMPIONS

• Matt Neal and Gordon Shedden team up in Lotus Cortina
• BTCC legends target elusive victory in showdown for sixties saloons
• Epic battles predicted in two-driver U2TC race

Touring car legends Matt Neal (below top right) and ‘Flash’ Gordon Shedden (below top left) are teaming up once again for a second shot at glory at this year’s 25th anniversary Silverstone Classic (24-26 July).

The dynamic duo – who between them have racked up no fewer than four coveted BTCC titles – joined forces at last summer’s Classic to share a Lotus Cortina in the popular Saturday morning showdown for pre-1966, Under 2-Litre Touring Cars (U2TC). Shedden took pole position in the Team Dynamics-prepared car and was involved in a titanic battle royale for the lead before a mid-race mechanical issue scuppered all chances of a famous debut victory.

The pair are now revved up for a Classic return and have their sights set on the U2TC win that eluded them in 2014.

“Matt and I will be back in the Lotus Cortina following our escapades of 12 months ago,” confirmed Shedden. “That was the car’s competitive debut, and we haven’t really done anything with it since, so we’ll need to dust off the cobwebs if we want to finish the job we started last year and win the race.”

While competing at the Classic may be something of a weekend away from the pressures of competing for Honda Yuasa Racing in the country’s premier Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship, Neal agreed that they would not be taking the challenge lightly. Indeed, U2TC is one of Europe’s most fiercely-fought series for historic racing cars.

“The main aim is to go to Silverstone and have a bit of fun, although of course by nature ‘Flash’ and I are both competitive and we will want to do well,” he divulged. “In fact, we probably need to go out and do a bit of homework with the Cortina, because we’re certainly not underestimating the level of opposition in the U2TC class.”

Notably last summer’s U2TC winners, racing journalist Richard Meaden and Grant Tromans, will be back to defend their title as will runners-up Neil Brown and Richard Dutton – both crews in Lotus Cortinas. Others sure to be battling it out with Neal and Shedden include brothers Andrew and Max Banks in their Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint GTA (below bottom right) and the super-swift BMW 1800TiSA of Richard Shaw and 1969 Le Mans winner Jackie Oliver (below bottom left).

Win, lose or draw, though, the two BTCC boys are clearly excited to be revisiting the Classic next month.

“Last year was my first time at the Classic, and I really enjoyed myself,” enthused Shedden. “I couldn’t believe how many mega bits of kit there were across the board – all in one place. The variety is superb and the grids are massive – there were 41 entries in the U2TC race alone.

“Better still, it’s a real family-friendly weekend, with so much to see and do even aside from the spectacular racing. There really is something for everyone – a great mix of motor sport, live music and entertainment. It’s just a cracking all-round show.”

“I’m really looking forward to soaking up the whole atmosphere,” added Neal. “There are thousands of spectacular cars there from every decade from the 1920s onwards, and for petrol heads in particular it really is manna from heaven. Whatever your passion, the Silverstone Classic’s got the lot.”

Those wanting to see whether Neal and Shedden can make up for last year’s disappointment must purchase their tickets in advance. Adult admission starts from £40 and ticket prices include booking fees, parking, access to all paddocks, infield, grandstands, live music – this year topped by rock legends Status Quo – and the vast majority of the numerous attractions.

More news from Silverstone Classic HQ:

THE BENTLEY BOYS ARE BACK IN TOWN

• New Kidston Trophy attracts massive grid of Pre-War Sports Cars
• Magnificent racing history from the 1920s and 1930s
• Spectacular showdown set for Saturday morning

This year’s 25th anniversary Silverstone Classic (24-26 July) will celebrate its milestone Silver Jubilee with its widest-ever spectrum of glittering motor sport history.

At one end of the phenomenal panorama the introduction of F1 cars from the turbocharged Senna and Schumacher era brings the story almost up to date. The return of the evocative Pre-War Sports Cars meanwhile will take festival-goers much further back in time to an epoch when the famed Bentley Boys were victorious at Le Mans in the 1920s.

Adventurer and aviator Glen Kidston was one of them and he will be honoured at this year’s Classic. Silverstone will reverberate to the magnificent sound of a huge grid of wonderful cars from that golden age in what promises to be a vastly entertaining Kidston Trophy race on Saturday morning.

Kidston had been torpedoed twice in the same morning when serving as a Lieutenant Commander in the Royal Navy. By the mid 1920s he was a submarine Commander and when not at sea he set records as an aviator, hill climbed, conducted motorcycle speed trials on sand and raced cars, winning the 1930 Le Mans 24 Hour race in the Bentley Speed Six he shared with Woolf Barnato (below top and bottom).

Having survived several serious scrapes, Kidston sadly lost his life less than a year later when the de Havilland Puss Moth he was flying broke up in mid-air during a dust storm over the Drakensberg Mountains in southern Africa.

It takes quite a grid to represent such a buccaneering character, but Motor Racing Legends has succeeded, with more than 45 eye-catching entries already received. A full complement of 50 now looks probable for a dazzling 40-minute showdown complete with a mandatory pit-stop and optional driver change.

In a race dedicated to a Bentley Boy you need a Bentley or two. The Classic will have at least nine, including the 4½-litre Le Mans of vintage Bentley guru Stanley Mann plus a pair of 3-litre machines dating back to 1924 – currently the oldest on the near-capacity entry.

At the front of the pack are likely to be the big Invicta S Type of Chris and Nick Ball, the Alta Sports of Gareth Burnett and Richard Evans, and Rudi Friedrichs in the Alvis Speed 20 SA in which he has clocked up more than 150,000 miles, including no fewer than three Peking-Paris rallies. The aluminium Frazer Nash Supersports of Fred Wakeman and Patrick Blakeney-Edwards is another potential front-runner – it’s one of at least seven Frazer Nashes rolling back the years at the Classic.

What makes the Kidston Trophy special, though, is the wildly diverse sizes and power of the competing machines, the mighty Bentleys dwarfing cars such as the Austin Seven, as the seatbelt-less drivers saw away at the wooden steering wheels and negotiate the modern Grand Prix track on narrow tyres.

The sparkling entry also features a mouth-watering array of nine early Aston Martins plus the three Talbot 105 ‘works’ Fox & Nicholl team cars complete with their famous GO 52, GO 53 and GO 54 registrations. Paul Grist’s wonderful Alfa Romeo 8C 2.9, Richard Pilkington’s Talbot T26, Richard Wilson’s 1935 Squire Short Chassis and Martin Halusa’s gorgeous Alfa Romeo 8C 2300 Zagato Spyder are other certain crowd-pullers. Halusa is also fielding his iconic Bugatti 35C.

“We’ve been completely blown away by the entry,” admitted Duncan Wiltshire, Motor Racing Legends Chairman. “Clearly this is going to be a very special Silverstone Classic but, even so, the response has been really, really fabulous. The amazing grid has a lovely eclectic feel to it.”

The inaugural Kidston Trophy is just one of the many, many highlights on Saturday’s packed programme. Others include BTCC champions Matt Neal and Gordon Shedden gunning for victory in the fiercely-fought U2TC race for Sixties saloons, the opening FIA Masters Formula One contest for a record field of F1 cars from the DFV era, Group C prototypes racing into the sunset and, of course, rock legends Status Quo performing live. It all adds up to a truly unmissable day of evocative entertainment.

SCARF AND GOGGLES AWARDS TO HONOUR EVENT ORIGINATORS

• New accolades dedicated to Mervyn Garton and Stuart Graham
• Popular Scarf and Goggles bar makes a welcome return

The special Silver Jubilee celebrations at next month’s Silverstone Classic (24-26 July) will see the introduction of two new awards honouring the two driving forces behind the circuit’s first-ever historic motor sport festival 25 years ago: Mervyn Garton (below bottom left) and Stuart Graham (above right).

Paying tribute to the pair’s pioneering achievements in creating the blueprint for what’s now The World’s Biggest Classic Motor Racing Festival, the Stuart Graham ‘Scarf and Goggles’ Award will be presented to what’s judged to be the most admirable car competing at the Classic while the Mervyn Garton ‘Scarf and Goggles’ Award will acclaim the best off-track visitor attraction. Both will be perpetual accolades awarded annually as from next month’s event.

“It’s the original ground-breaking vision of Stuart and Mervyn which remains right at the heart of everything we do at Silverstone Classic today – that’s why we are so delighted to be acknowledging both their foresight and achievements with these two very special Scarf and Goggles awards,” said Nick Wigley, Event Director (above left).

“The Scarf and Goggles bar, after which these awards are named, was such an integral part of those early events. Now I’m pleased to announce we will be further evoking its fond memories with the opening of a new Scarf and Goggles country pub on our Village Green (below top).”

Back in 1990 when Garton and Graham first put their heads together, there were very few major events dedicated entirely to historic racing cars. The Oldtimer Grand Prix at the Nürburgring, the L'Age d'Or meeting at Montlhéry and the Monterey Historics at Laguna Seca were already established, but in England, the world centre of historic racecar preparation and ownership, there was nothing to compare.

As well being a TT winner on both two and four wheels, Graham was a director of the BRDC, the organisation that runs Silverstone. He was keen to see the circuit expand its portfolio of events in order to broaden the base that supported the British Grand Prix, upon which the venue was heavily reliant.

Graham realised that there was wide support at home for his idea of a Silverstone Historic Festival and it was agreed that the first two-day meeting would be held a fortnight after the 1990 British Grand Prix. This would have the added advantage of being able to use much of the infrastructure already in place for the F1 meeting.

The modest opening 12-race timetable and seemingly notable 426 racing entries laid the foundations to what’s now not just the biggest historic race meeting on Earth but also the world’s biggest annual motor racing event of any genre. Last year’s record breaker featured an unrivalled 1,125 entries – a figure that could be topped again in July.

Over the last 25 years, of course, the scope of the thriving historic scene has widened considerably and now includes many classes which were front-running categories in contemporary racing at the time of the first Historic Festival. These include categories such as Group C sports cars, 90s GT Legends and Super Touring saloons, each of which have now earned their place in the Silverstone Classic line-up.

“This award is a very kind and thoughtful gesture,” said Graham. “It is amazing how quickly 25 years seems to have passed, since we first got the idea of a major classic festival at Silverstone off the ground. I was very fortunate to have a small but equally enthusiastic team to provide valuable help in many areas thus ensuring a successful first event.

“Today it gives me – and I am sure everyone involved in the early days – a great deal of pleasure and satisfaction to see the eminence of the Classic as it continues to grow, thanks to the excellent work of Nick Wigley and his team who have done a fantastic job. I now wish this great meeting continued success for the next 25 years and beyond.”

From the outset, it was also planned that the Festival would be more than simply a series of races. Considerable thought was given to activities and attractions away from the track in the hope that the event would appeal to motoring enthusiasts and families beyond those who would be satisfied by the race programme alone.

To that end, the late Mervyn Garton was appointed to mastermind the off-track activities. The revolutionary formula he created has been adopted at most other large-scale motoring events since and continues to thrive at the Classic.

Right from the beginning it was anticipated that car clubs would be keen to attend if they were allocated dedicated spaces in which their members could meet and display their cars, and so it proved.

Mervyn's fertile mind also introduced air displays, live jazz music plus the creation of trade and automobilia malls. By the time of the third Festival, another of his innovations appeared in the shape of the 'Scarf and Goggles' bar, which became a very popular social hub close to the paddock, and somewhere where racegoers could enjoy a convivial atmosphere and meeting place during and after the racing.

"Silverstone was the core of our family life and Mervyn made it his mission to cultivate a unique experience of live entertainment, classic motoring and aviation with the Scarf and Goggles at its heart,” said his widow Janet Garton (below bottom right). “He was delighted to see the rise of the Classic and would have loved to see Status Quo at Silverstone! He would also be deeply honoured to be associated with an award that recognises the most impressive off–track attraction for visitors.”

From an estimated attendance of 20,000 in 1990, the 2014 event played host to 94,000 spectators with the milestone 100,000 landmark set to be surpassed for the first time this summer. The car club feature conceived by Garton has spiralled in popularity, too. At the inaugural meeting 21 groups were represented, a figure that has grown to an unprecedented 120 in 2015.
