We have old banger runabout (98 Corsa) that cracks on the b post level with windows.

I welded it up last year after being there for 4/5 years and it cracked around the weld.

Has anybody had this happen on a classic and how did you repair it. I am sure somebody has the knowledge to share on the best course of action

I am tempted to make a repair panel to cover it and fully weld that.

Thanks

Nick

The welding process actually creates more stress especially MIG which is harder and less flexible.

Cutting out, gas welding and annealing a reinforced patch will cure it and drill a hole at the ends of the crack and reweld

If it's any comfort it seems they're prone to it. I have a similar Corsa and, wondering if there were any particular weaknesses I should look out for, asked the MOT tester - decent bloke - what they normally fail on and it was one of the first things he came up with.

Wherever you can, avoid a butt weld, use a patch.

Thanks guys

You have confirmed what I thought that a patch is the best way to repair it.

I will have to find somebody local to gas weld it after I have made the patches.
