Thank you Ray. I had not read that before and found it most interesting.

William Hillman was one of the 'originals' that went to Coventry with James Starley to first build sewing machines and then into the cycle trade. IIRC together they formed a company to produce the Ariel cycle, which, after that company was dissolved or amalgamated eventually became the Ariel motorcycle.

I was born in Dunstable, so knew about the Commer and Vauxhall concerns there, but as It was before my fifth birthday that my folks set off for Australia, I have no memories of those businesses.

My father did have a set of cutlery branded 'Vauxhall'. During the war he was doing a job at the factory, and had just been given a meal there when the air raid sirens went off. He was hurried away to a shelter, taking his meal with him. After eating he retained the cutlery, and I frequently used it as I grew up.

Poor old Dunstable. It's not what it once was.

Many people hold the local Council to blame for waging war on the car. With high parking charges, speed ramps everywhere it is just less hassle to shop in Milton Keynes.
