|
|
Both the rods that operate the front brakes on my recently acquired Rover 9 have quite a few bends in them. Not sharp bends, but looking along the length its very obvious. These are about 5-6ft long, with a right angle bend where they are connected to the operating lever(retained by a washer and split pin), and are threaded at the axle fitting, with a spacer and nut connection. Anybody know what grade of steel these will be? Can I just straighten them as best I can, or do I need to replace them? The rear brake rods are shorter and seem pretty straight.
thanks

I had a slightly bent brake rod on my Austin 10. The local garage who MOT's it, recommended that I keep an eye on it, but did not feel that it was a risk. Over the years that I had the car , it did not seem to get any worse and the brakes worked fine. _________________ 1953 Citroen Traction

Well, I went to the vise, and eventually got it pretty straight. It feels quite soft, almost no spring in it, so I took it slowly, and eyeballing it in different planes and removing obvious bends it looks much better now.
Lesson learned.
