We are currently restoring a couple of old lorries and are starting to work out new wiring looms and the lights that are needed. We are making sure that all of them have visible lights but are having some queries with regards to side lights.

Does anyone know when side lights became compulsory fitment? One of our trucks is 1960 and has sidelights, indicators on the side of the cab etc... The other one we are currently working on is 1935 and I am not sure what it needs to have. And what can be made removal and only used on the way to shows.

Cheers
Ed

Hi
Coulld I suggest googling for contemporary or in use pictures of the vehicle to see what they had when working.

What is it?

That's perfect.

We've got original photos of both vehicles, they are a Scammell rigid 6 and Unipower ballast tractor. The problem is working out what we fit on the Scammell when it first comes out. The Unipower has the issue of having cab indicators and I want to fit front ones as most drivers nowadays won't notice the other ones.

I'll sort out some photos and post them up.

Cheers

Hi
I made enquiries with my local MoT man.

A vehicle has to have front position lamps in order to get a 24 hr use ticket.
A daylight only ticket can be issued for a vehicle without them, though that is usually issued to vehicles without any lights.

I understand you might not require an MoT but I would suspect that you might need lights that comply with the current law in order to use a roadworthy argument.
