Hi all,

I've no idea what the ownership experience for a Caravelle is like, but I've always thought them to be a good-looking car. The only caveat with this imported example is that it's been lifted by a forklift, so inevitably there'll be things to attend to underneath (not necessarily a biggie so long as the structure wasn't affected).

Obviously [or not?] a nice container-load shipped in? [See ''other sales?'']

A nice, glamorous car of the day.

In my youth, referred to as a 'hairdressers' car....much like the other two seaters of the time, based on basic saloon underpinnings,and/or mechanicals.

All for the 'looks and show', very little attention to 'go'?

VW Karmann Ghia , and stuff from FIAT, like the 850 spider, spring to mind.

Still a nice car for all that?

My experience of 1960's [and '70's!] Renault metal isn't a good one......Huntley & Palmers put better steel in their biscuit tins.

Maybe I have just had 'bad experiences' in this department?

What was the difference between the Caravelle and the Floride?
They both looked the same to me. Very pretty car. A friend had one in black with a grey metalic hard-top. Looked fabulous! The car was OK too!

It may be of interest to forum members that I have known the seller of this Renault for many years, He also has two TR6s for sale on Ebay as well.
I have dealt with him on a number of occasions and without appearing to give him a personal endorsement, the descriptions of the cars he sells are accurate.

His normal "stock in trade" is 1960s Fords and Vauxhalls and he sold the Hooper Mark 1 Capri we discussed in another topic last year.

According to this it just depends on when and where it was sold.

I'm not sure where wiki gets it's information, but I do know that,in the Netherlands at least, the Caravelle moniker only appeared at the launch of the bigger engined 1100 version in 1964.
I don't think it ever sold in huge numbers, probably because of the lowly Dauphine underpinnings.
Although the VW Karmann Ghia lived in the same bracket, being more powerful(and more expensive) it seemed to sell better.
Someone mentioned Fiat's 850 spider, but this was in a different league, and designed in a later era.The comparable Fiat to the Caravelle would have been the 1200 spider, which was a much better car,and cheaper than the Renault.

That was me mentioning the FIAT......I wasn't doing a comparison between anything, merely observing how, at the time, these types of car were viewed [probably only by me?? ]

A bit of research....

The Floride was the original Renault concept, but badged as Caravelle in the USA.

Caravelle itself was an upgraded Floride, a facelift, and mechanicals sourced from the Renault 8.
