|
|
Just got hold of a 103E which has been in a barn for 35+ years , so not on DVLA system - would like to get the V5 in my name with it's original number ( no paper work with car ) but for some reason the car has a D suffix registration . Will i just end up with an " Age related " plate ? I've done a similar thing before with a Fordson N tractor through a club , but then i had the paperwork and photo's of it in the 70's with it's registration visible . Any advice welcome . Regards Al |

Hi,
If you can determine the age of the car via its chassis number (is the plate still on the bulkhead?), then you can go down the age-related route if needs be.
If you know what the original reg. was, and you can find original records that tie your car's chassis number to that reg., then you may well be able to return the correct reg. to the car. Some areas have registration records preserved, others have been lost, so it's a bit of a lottery when it comes to acquiring DVLA-recognised documents that prove the chassis no./reg. no. link.

Hi....welcome to the world of Sidevalve Fords?
The chassis number is crudely engraved on top of the left side front chassis member, and can be hard to find in the depths of grot. It will be just in front of where the bulkhead sits.
With this, it is possible to date the chassis [and body].
I recommend joining the Ford Sidevalve Owners Club.
Once you are in a position to obtain registration documents, tell them and they will put you in touch with one of the official club experts, who will confirm for DVLA the car is, what it is.
If the original registration is unavailable, then DVLA will issue an age-related plate [currently I think, Scottish sequences.]
If, however, the car is mechanically modified, there may be a problem.
In any event, the FSOC are the recognized folk as far as DVLA are concerned.
Plus, a useful source of spare parts? [Along with SmallFordSpares?

Thanks for that , pretty much as i expected ( as i've done it with the tractor mentioned ) This is my first sidevalve Ford , I only collected it Sunday , which was a bit hectic , I haven't had chance to get the numbers off it yet due to various other mechanical issues - the Trooper which towed the trailer stopped charging and the Car failed it's MOT on Friday , so i've been a bit pre occupied. I have got some photo's - as soon as i can work out how to get them off my phone ! Wonder why it's ended up with a 1966 registration ? it's got a period red sticker on the windscreen which says RAF Lakenheath with a serial number of some sort , could it have been ex-MOD ? Thanks again , regards Al. |

It might just have been owned by a member of the RAF...or Mod-related civilian, and the sticker could just be like a 'parking' sticker?
The chassis number is a bit of a pig to get to see, and is often rusted over....as it is merely a set of letters & numbers stamped into the chassis rail ....by hand..so can be a bit distorted.
It will be located immediately behind the left front lever shocker top mount....there is a 'diagonal' chassis brace riveted to the chassis rail at that point....on the top of the side member.....so very hard to see, especially with the wing and inner panel still in place.
{Have just gone to look at my own Pop chassis]
Be wary of grinding or harsh scraping to find the numbers....they are not stamped in very deeply. |

IIRC, Ford didn't have a 'chassis plate' for the uprights [103E Pop is the vehicle here]
The 'plate', if it is still attached, gives the body number plus the original engine number. [Briggs built the bodies]
The plate does not give the 'chassis' number.
However, chassis numbers did match original engine numbers, up to a point

Thank you both again , very helpful . She won't be started yet , i've got to finish a Mk1 Capri which is for short circuit racing ( non contact ) this rolling shell was going to scrapped and had provided parts for the previous owners restoration and i may restore my 1983 SIII LWB Land Rover first which is an Ex-M.O.D Commercial Logistics model ( basically a civilian spec one with a Nato Hitch and trailer socket ) But at least it's safely in it's new home and has been saved .
P.S did try to load photo but failed , i'll try again . |

Looks like a 1959 , couldn't see the stamped chassis number on the chassis , the engine number on the plate is C946796 . there's a riveted on narrow plate above that plate which reads TC/642/AC - but there was another plate attached over the top of that one which is stamped 13-11-1962 . and another small plate below the engine number one which reads 46 ( in very small letters followed by 137602 . There was also some paperwork under the back seat relating to a USAF serviceman dated 1971 . |

I recall the chassis number was very hard to find on my 7W, when I did find it it was pretty crudely engraved. _________________ Various Rootes Vehicles. |

I think the USAF serviceman who probably owned it , had higher aspirations regarding his next car - or maybe he was going home - found an American Motors Corporation dealer postcard of the 1971 AMC Hornet SST under the rear seat . |
