I have a 1964 Hillman Super Minx which appears to have been undersealed at some time. I am sure I read smewhere that when new these cars would have been body colour on the floorpans and chassis. I have a few repairs to do and am tempted to just paint them black when done. I also need to buy some body colour paint however and wonderd if I should just buy a bit more and return it to what is should be? Appreciate any thoughts people have or any information advice as to how it should be. |

I had a look at your posts, lovely car. I used to have a Humber Sceptre when in my teens and they are very similar. Going through your posts I don't think there are any underside pictures, do you have any? Also is your car undersealed? Wondering if it's maybe factory? |

It depends what you want to do with your car for the coming years.
If it is a car used frequently all year round, or do you want to take it to shows? If to the shows, do you want it to be as it came from the factory?
Best would be to have a factory finish. In case of selling later it will be a bonus for the buyer. On the other hand it will mean more frequent underside checks to see if nothing nasty will appear. _________________ a car stops being fun when it becomes an investment |

If doing patch repairs I think the best and simplest option would be to match whatever is there already. However, if doing a full on restoration I would go for body colour followed by a wax-based coating. These can give very good protection these days, but if required could be relatively easily removed by steam cleaning giving you the best of both options. |

It's a low mileage car so I hope to keep it that way, although I do want to go to some shows and use it a bit. I don't want to cover anything up and like the idea of being able to check regularly and fix anything that comes up.
At the moment its kind of spot repairs I am doing but some is already body colour; grey and some is black. I don't intend to strip the underseal, other than anywhere it needs it but I could go either way is I think what I am saying, body colour or black.
Do you think it would have been body colour from new then? Is it possible it could have been factory undersealed or maybe a fastidious owner would buy it and get it undersealed, did they do that in the 60s? I am too young to remember, have to say that as it's the first time for a while I have been "too young" for anything
Appreciate your comments and advice |

My 1967 Singer Chamois is body colour underneath - but the Imps were built in Scotland, so the Coventry factory may have adopted a different treatment ... _________________ in the garage: 1938 Talbot Ten Airline

I think I am going to go for body colour. I am going to a paint supplier at the weekend in the hope he can match it and I will just buy more than I originally intended. After that it should be nice and easy to see any bemishes that appear |
