Magic, it'd be worth including the other Beverley pics you posted into this thread.

There are more than I thought so have done so. I've also found some more of RAF Masirah that, though not of aircraft, may be of interest - will add them later. _________________ David

Hi
What is the one to the left of the Pioneers?
Round intake possibly out on the wing. I think it is a Meteor, nose-wheel looks right as well. _________________ Bristols should always come in pairs.

It's a Meteor - I'm sure of that because I grew up with them on various bases when I was a nipper and was allowed to sit in one when I was 3 or 4.
I'm wondering if there'a Supermarine Swift or two in that line up in Photo 3 and some Hawker Hunters at the far end.
Photo 1 has some Vickers Valettas in the background; they were used as 'taxis', shuttling crews and supplies around - according to my Dad, the Beverley engine shown being fitted arrived in the back of one. _________________ David

I'd agree with that. Probably an F3.
Wonder what's in that funny nose? |

The Argosy was the 1st aircraft I worked on after leaving RAF Halton (1968). Also went out to RAF Muharraq, (Good ol' Argdet) for six months. While out there I had a taxi ride in an old Pontiac Parisienne!
Argosy - the Whistling tit or 40,000 pip pins flying in close formation.
Cheers, Tony. _________________ It may work in practice, but not necessarily in theory! |

You've reminded me of something my Dad told me about an officer at RAF Khormaksar (Aden) who had his car shipped out from England and used to tear along the beach, foot to the floor, terrifying the locals and scaring any passengers. The car was a Bristol so I imagine it didn't hang about. _________________ David

Hmmmm..Aden.....first visit, very early '69.
Paid-off first ship [as a Nav Cadet] there...[Britsh Hero]
Spent a week sat in the Crescent Hotel, with other officers, since we had missed the one flight out, by about 2 hours.
Eventually flew out, courtesy of Middle East Airlines, in a DH Comet, of all things.
Rear of passenger cabin rammed with wooden crates full of live chickens....breakfast served was chapattis and tomato...a small inspection hatch lifted and detached from starboard wing, as plane lifted off.
Given that my previous flight experience [about 10 years earlier] was a Vanguard out to Jersey, and a DC3 back....I really knew no better.
Jeddah was an eye-opener.....woe betide any passenger that stepped over the yellow lines! paused there for a break..not allowed to remain on the aircraft...good thing, as it really was too hot, IIRC.
Eventually got to Beirut....air raid alarms and all! Flew home, same airline, this time a 707 wth American crew....our party had to suffer an upgrade, at the crews' insistance....what a shame.
Heathrow, damp, & drizzly, was a let-down. |
