My first though was a mid-late 30's Lanchester, possibly the 14. But that angle of the bonnet side doesn't seem right for it.

WOW! Never imagined what the hole was for.

Reminds me of those 'portholes' - a must have accessory in the 50's for yer fenders!

(Better engineered of course.)

Daimlers and Lanchesters of the mid/late 30s/40s tend to have a flat shelf at the side of the bonnet, which continues along the scuttle. The only identifying feature in Penman's snippet is the door handle being above the side door moulding, often they're below, that and the distinct curve to the bonnet lower edge.

After the purchase I became a member of the Triumph Roadster club. Excellent club with a huge archive which included this great picture of my car back in the late fifties:
