Did it earlier this year, it must have been end of February because I was in China and had an email with an error on the form and couldn't correct until I returned. They sent me everything they had from 1978 onwards. _________________ 1957 ford popular

The form was updated in September 2017 and still says you need reasonable cause to ask for the information. I suspect if some have been refused it's due to the vehicle being a hotrod or some such and with the new legislation coming up they want keep any information that could help an owner of such keep their reg. Only guessing on this. _________________ 1957 ford popular |

A comment on another forum suggests that this is largely due to the replacement of the Data Protection Act with the GDPR, and some issue that previous owners have not specifically given their consent to have their details provided. |

yes, i tried this recently - the form has changed and no longer includes the 'full history of the vehicle' tick box in section 2
they rejected my first attempt (on the old form in august) as 'historical research' is not 'reasonable cause'... even then after a covering letter stating my full intentions of what i wanted to use the info for and how that i believe there to be errors in the information they have and wanted to get things clarified and cleared up they still sent me the standard 'reasonable cause' response letter.
the form now appears to only be a way to get current owner details in a case of accident fault, or parking fines, or abandoned vehicles etc. |

These people have, it seems, forgotten that they are public servants.

It's the legisation that has changed, not the DVLA staff's memory. _________________ David

In these days when profile cloning is more prolific (or perhaps we just hear about it more?) and folk want to protect their privacy; I understand why these sort of restrictions are enforced.
However I would like to see an exemption for what the DVLA class as "Historic Vehicles"....the clue is in the name; History. I would propose that as the custodians of Historic Vehicles , we have an obligation to preserve and pass on said history to future custodians. If we are not prepared to do this for future custodians then I argue that we shouldn't enjoy some of the other benefits that the DVLA offer us such as zero road tax.
Alternatively if we could get the history less the last 10 years, I'd have thought this would allay privacy concerns .
Neither of these proposals will see the light of day, as I doubt the administrative burden could be justified .

Perhaps the way forward on this would be for clubs to have some role in this, rather like they do with reclaiming "lost" registration numbers? A soft measure like that could make a lot of oiks shrug and look for an easier, faster target. |
