Hi all,

This looks like a worthwhile project, judging by the blurb there's some setup work to do after being out of use for a few years. The interior's usable as-is. Cosmetically the paint could do with a little tlc in places, and the pop-riveted sills (cover sills?) want re-doing. Overall though, a smart car so long as the reserve is sensible?

Lovely project, would look great kept as is and just used. Its so much more appealing seeing a car aged like this to me.

On another note, its funny how there are so many similarities between the body styling on this and my Mk8 Minx. I know its all Rootes etc but I've never really thought about it before, and also, you don't see many Hawk's of this age surviving.

I see that it's up to £4100 and reserve still not met so far, I wonder what figure the seller has in mind for it .. is it worth much more than this?

I would say yes for a Super Snipe with the longer bonnet and six cylinder, but a Hawk with painted bumpers?

There is an ever increasing difference between a vendor's hopeful expectation of price......and the pragmatic views of ''proper enthusiasts''.

I feel vendors are more hopeful of catching a buyer who has a nice lump sum to so-called 'invest' in a 'classic car'...rather than a died-in-the-wool enthusiast...........a safer place to put money, than a piffling savings scheme.

Which really is a shame, since true enthusiasts will get priced out to the market, and those fortunate enough to have some capital sitting around [pensions cashed in, for example?}, who are prepared to pay, what in reality are, unrealistic prices for anything old....and these old, but maybe sound bangers will rarely see the light of day, once purchased, as they represent too much of a financial risk to be allowed out on the roads, willy nilly.

I don't blame anyone for seeking the highest price the distorted market is prepared to pay.

But I do fear for these old cars [of any description] once other, more profitable, financial products come back into play.....for,who will then buy these motors?

You do tend to see quite a few classics re-surface time and again on ebay these days. They sell for an over the top price then 6 months later are advertised again at a bit more with the vendor saying they took on too much or aren't mechanically minded etc...

I have seen some very nice cars end up being passed round when if they started at a realistic price they may have been bought by an enthusiast and actually worked on.

A humble four door "family" saloon like the Hawk will never be worth much money. Surely there are some that are looking for a good one because they have memories with a similar car, and they may pay good money, but these persons are rare.
Cars like these will not have the appeal to people who do not have memories with it. I try to look into these old cars with the mindset of my son, 23 years old, or his friends. They are interested in old cars providing they look good or sporty, which means the majority of four door saloons falls out of that category.

I had to wait for almost a year before someone came up to buy my Hillman Minx 3C. Which is one of only a handful known in the Netherlands, in good condition. It appealed to me because of its styling (I still think it is one of the best proportioned / styled four door saloon of the fifties/sixties) and old fashioned peculiarities like front bench and column steering. But I have found out that there are not many like me who value these kind of things. I only got a low price for it but was glad the new owner is a true enthusiast.

Reserve now lowered.....I found, a while ago, a similar car, later model, OHV engine...an Aussie import to the YuK....appearing to be in very nice condition....at about the same price as the one above. It seems 4-4 1/2 K sterling seems to be the price area for the more mundane, but sound, '50's cars are going for? Inflationary??

If I hadn't already got two [actually, more...there's an Ashley body and a Ford chassis awaiting my attentions, when the weather warms up once more...next week, perhaps, now that winter is almost over?]....decent running oldies, I would have been tempted....the old Hawks, and Standard Ensigns appeal to me...something sturdy, but basic...to run about in....that isn't an Austin or a Morris or that sort of thing.
For reliable, stolid, comfy cars, I would look no further than at what the British Government were using in the 50's?

£4475 now, still RNM, 1hr 30 to go ...

It'd be a great comfy old girl to drive around in.

Very much a 'no rush' old lady?

Built like the tanks that rolled off the other production line?

Very solid, very 'British'...in the old tradition....an automotive pinstripe suit?

Now it's relisted.....with a BIN price that's £750 approx more than the top bid on the previous auction.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/humber-hawk-mk-1V-1952-truly-superb-rare-saloon-/152821783646?

OK, maybe it's more 'honest' than refusing to sell to the winner when they turn up, unless they cough up another wodge of money..?

With all that needs doing to it, just to get it back on the road....I reckon it's more than 2 grand overpriced.?

I owned a 'Hawk' for a very short time. Bought it as our 'Honeymoon' car in December 1968. We toured through Victoria, parts of New South Wales as well as Canberra, returning to Melbourne via Western NSW. Round trip of about 4,000 miles. Bought the car for $100, and sold it for $100. Had a very enjoyable trouble-free trip before heading overseas.

Seems a bit silly to me, its been re-listed around £750 higher than the winning bid but with a buy it now or best offer? Surely if he takes say a £500 offer that's only slightly more than the previous winning bid?

Still...for that sort of money, I would at least expect to be able to drive it away? IE, to be useable, if nowhere near perfect.
