Good afternoon peoples,
can anyone out there tell me about fitting LED instrument lighting? I'll need about 6 LEDs, what other components do I need (apart from a 12 V battery).

I have constructed a box to enclose the rear of the instruments and need them lighting from within.

I know apsolutely nothing about LEDs.Confused

Looking forward to your replies. Cheers, Tony. Question

Didn't you start this topic back in June/July ? I recall there being several answers then, or were they not of any use?

Yes there were a couple of replies but alas, they were all a tad technical.

I'm hoping someone can come up with a "Janet & John" reply Embarassed

There seems to be some sort of starter component required which I do not understand. I'm going to try and ask the technical staff at R.S. for help in the morning.

Cheers, Tony.

Some sort of resistor because LED's don't 'do' full voltage?

http://www.dynamoregulatorconversions.com/ Are a Lincoln based company run by Pete Jury. Perhaps I missed a link somewhere?

I have responded to Tony's private messages to me and included alanb's link.
(I'm not Pete Jury.)

LEDs are readily available, I have many in 6V for my 26 Rover. Note also that they are polarity sensitive - get it wrong, no light. Establish which is +ve lead with a 9v battery, and mark it. Also note that SOME , but not all, wedge type leds come with their leads folded back over the pointy end of the wedge such that in some sockets you have an immediate short circuit. If fitting to an older car wedge sockets are unlikely.

Ebay has loads for buttons

Just wire them up they run on 12v as the resistor is built on, if you connect them the wrong way around they are protected so just turn them around and they work.
I would drill a small hole and once you have wired up and tested the LED's just glue them in with no nails or silicone, its unlikely they will ever need replacing.
