When I was a student in the 1970s I knew a guy who had an A40 Mk11 rally car. OMG did it go!?! I tried being a navigator once but failed miserably. You really need a lot of practise to be any help. I would go as far as to say there is as much skill required in being a good navigator as being a good driver. Unfortunately my friend went off the road and wrapped the A40 around a tree. Luckily I wasn't in the car at the time!
After languishing in the car park for a while, he was ordered to remove the wreck. Not being able to pay for a scrap car collection, my mate sold me the car for £2. I removed the engine and gearbox and fitted it to my Austin A30. It cost me another few pounds to have the wreck removed.
I ended up with an incredibly quick A30. !! |

Here are a few photos of mine
She is in storage at the moment in my friends barn, I hope to make a start on the repairs this year.
She had a lot of repairs underneath done by the previous owner, he bought it in 1961 at about 6months old, we think it was probably a dealerships demonstrator, the repairs were all riveted in position which is a bit of a blessing as there is no grotty welding to grind off, just a lot of drilling.
My friend Neil has been restoring cars to concourse for over 40years, mainly he is into A30/A35 cars vans and pickups. This car will be done mainly by me under Neil's supervision. she will be put on the road in an as is body work condition and I will continue with the paint and body at a later date at home. _________________ Paul

Again I have regrets that when I was younger I didn't think anything was worth photographing. One morning I came out to the A30 to find some of the other students had fitted mini wheels to it.
I didn't see the funny side of it at the time but I now wish I had taken a few snaps. |

Thought I'd bump this up - any progress on the A40?

I had a very quick 1098 A 40 for a short while at College in the 1970s. It had been breathed on by a fellow student who had ambitions to be a rally driver. Unfortunately on one such event he wrapped it around a tree and that was the end of that. But not quite. I bought the remains for £2. and put the engine in my A30.
I had the fastest accelerating A30.... up to about 65mph when because of the low gearing it would run out of steam. A really fun car.
The A40 handled nicely due mainly to the lower centre of gravity and the anti roll bar on the front. It was also a good looking car with more practical styling than the A30/35. I preferred the Mk2 grille.
It also had a neat column mounted indicator switch that screwed onto the opposite side to the lights switch. I fitted it to my A30 and remember being well pleased with the result.
I also swapped over the anti roll bar and the rear brakes. Neither seemed to make much difference to the A30!
Sadly, I have no photos of either car - although there is possibility that the A30 survives but is not registered. |

At her request, my daughter had her brother's mk1 A40 as her wedding car.
Not easy getting the huge dress into the back seat, and even harder getting it out! |
