We often holiday in summer on the south coast of France, and the last time I drove we took a room half way, plus breakfast, and with the tolls and the jams arrived at 3pm the next day. Same for the return because in France holiday lets are from 4pm on the Saturday and so you have no choice. It is exhausting, even in a modern car with auto box and aircon.
So last year we took the train; 4 hours 30 for the journey, rent a car at the station in Marseilles, drive 65 miles and Bob's your uncle and Fanny's your aunt. We are there, fresh as daisies. The return was just as easy wafting along at 180 mph and arriving on time at Le Mans. The overall difference in cost revealed a balance in favour of the train, and we shan't be doing that journey again in the car.
But wait; we have now found out that we can take the plane far cheaper, taking an hour and a half, so that will be it next year. We have far too much expense with the house this year to go sadly. |
