I'm glad to see someone else re-packing a silencer...thought I was the only titewad doing it?

It makes me wonder, if I revved the engine by blipping the throttle, whilst stuck in a traffic jam, would I make the bonnet of the car behind all hairy?

There are some high-end bike silencers that are re-packable.....as well as adjustable for length. The ends are riveted to the can body on some....I have been given one[from a Suzuki Bandit ] to adapt to fit my Dellow.....it even has an expansion chamber built-in to the flange...which is a 3 bolt jobbie with allen bolts.

I'm painting the wheels on the Firenza at the moment, as they've not been done for some time and had quite a few stone chips. But it's really inconvenient to get more than one off at a time, so it's taking longer than I'd hoped.

Got the old Healey out and drove it up through the golden valley via Slad. Beautiful day and stuff turning green, so quite cheering after all the global warming we’ve been having.

Greased up the front suspension on the MM today, and brushed around some more Waxoyl/grease.

I also removed the A40's rear seat base, to reveal a) an old rodent nest b) as a result, a disintegrating underside to the rear squab, grrrrrr Mad

The top side doesn't look bad (I gave it a clean), but now I'm on the hunt for a replacement squab, or a squab with a good base that I can swap my cover over to.

So you are back at working on the A40 then Rick?

Last week I sort of cleaned the leather from the Jag 420 and put some conditioner to it. And some more after a few hours. Some more, and again some. The difference is amazing. Soft leather where before it had become hard.

I didn't actually do anything physical on my lorry but I met up with a traditional signwriter today and have a date booked for the work and we worked out the text and colours. Its quite exciting now.

Last week the 420 failed its bi-yearly inspection because of a non-working claxon (which worked a few days earlier), have to clean up the chassis number and I have to fit a induction-triggered relay to the LPG system.

Put petrol in it and drove it round the block. Ran beautifully apart from the usual clutch drag until she warmed up.

Repaired the horn of the 420. It never worked the way it should, ie. by using the horn push or the half horn ring. The previous owner used a push button mounted under the dash. After 12 years I had enough of that.
A wire comes from the horn relay into the steering column via a slip ring, the horn push let it make earth to the column. I tested the wire and horn push, all fine. But the inner steering column did not have earth. I looked everywhere (the TR4 use a wire to bridge the U/J in the steering column) but I could not find out how it was to make earth. Finally I discovered a second "wiper" was missing from the column - a brass lip which screwed on the outer column makes contact on the inner.
Barrett, a local vintage Jaguar supplier was out of stock so I had to improvise. Took a copper tube, cut off 2 cm, cut it lengthwise, flattened the remains and cut out something that should fit. It worked - at least at the bi-yearly inspection this afternoon which it passed.

Renewed an anti roll bar clamp [by making & welding up a replacement]...now not so wobbly.

I re-fitted the seats in the Commer today, I had them done about 5 years ago and they have sat carefully packed away since then. I am now left with re-wiring and some little finishing jobs here and there and the signwriter is coming down next Saturday.
So, after a 10 year restoration it feels very good to be into the last month or so.

Only serious corrosion on the F350 was the base of the N/S A post. Fixing that was a task for last week and I'm pleased with the result.

Other event last week was placing our parts order from LMC in the States. Everything in stock and less than a fortnight for delivery!

Two big boxes of stuff arrived from Kansas ahead of schedule so there's no excuse for not pressing on with the F350.

Then after a bit of tinkering the Porsche 924S sailed through MOT ready to show at Singleton Park Swansea on Monday.

Put the last of the painted wheels back on the Firenza, though because I have a show on Monday, the two rear wheels haven't been painted on the inside. I'll get back to that at some point, not as big a problem as on the front as there isn't as much muck and brake dust floating around the back.

On the other car, I'm trying to figure out why the rear windows leak, so I currently have one of them out. I've put some seam sealer around some repairs, and will re-fit the window tomorrow which will hopefully sort it out.

Try Captain Tolleys Creeping Crack Cure

When I had new screen rubbers in the Escort it leaked profusely, I tried Captain Tolleys, at that price it wasn't much to lose. When I first took the car out in the rain the screen rubber appeared to lactate in the corners, I took the car home and mopped up the leak. That was 4yrs ago and it hasn't leaked since, so it must have crept, found the cracks, and cured!
