A seller of an early XJ6 sent me a recent appraisal document (6 pages) from an company she had asked provide a market value for the car. This is from the USA. What struck me as very odd is this note:

Badhuis,

I can see where they are coming from. The Americans in general look on the car as a tool to get from A to B reliably. Let’s face it, the first two series of XJs were pretty dire machines. IMHO the stretch to 4.2 litres was a step too far. Prone to overheating, crap fuel economy and saddled with a Borg Warner autobox. They never ever turned me on. However the car did have a lot of virtues in the road holding and comfort it provided. So if it were fitted with a GM 350 and auto gearbox you have the best of both worlds in fuel economy and reliability and it can be maintained anywhere on their continent.
