Apart from naval and aviation applications I just read that the first application in the motor industry was at Lea-Francis who around 1960 built prototypes of a saloon to be called the Crusader and that was to be complemented by a short chassis coupe to be called the Corsair. As both these cars initially started with the Ford Zephyr engine the plans had been shown to Ford design staff who later borrowed the name.

The Crusader even used Ford Zephyr front and rear screens.

Edsel, a Ford subsidiary, used the name Corsair in late 1957. On the 1958 models. Probably Lea Francis would not have been able to use the name on a production model. A good example of that is the Daimler Dart, Dodge used the name first, so Daimler had to change. Dodge Vipers sold in this country could not use that name because it infringed the copy rights of a small British company.
