I was tongue-in-cheek....however....I think the main difference that time has generated [between us, & them?] is that the influence of the tech is more of a psychological one, compared to the airfix times?
I cannot recall ever coming across airfix kit bullying, for example?
Today's kids seem to have more mental health issues than of yore? Maybe that is because , as a whole, we are more 'aware' of mental health issues, I don't know.
I do recall the feeling of awe when looking at what someone has done, in creating the model....better still, altering & modifying it to be something else? Seeing how a friend altered the simple Airfix Spitfire kit, into the various marks, amazed me...sheer delight. _________________ Dellow Mk2, 1951 built, reg 1952.

Absolutely! My admiration, however, is for the (now aged) generation of model Engineers. I occasionally look back through my collection of "model engineer" and toy with the idea of building, say, a steam engine from scratch. I will inevitably become despondent that I don't really have the skills or the expensive equipment to finish such a project. |

Somewhere I have the LBSCR manual for a Titch......
I could never get my head around Walschaerts valve gear until I read how to do it in the manual.... _________________ Dellow Mk2, 1951 built, reg 1952.

Actually , the Titch shown in the photo does not have Walshearts valve gear it is fitted with loose (or slip) eccentric valve gear. Which is a lot simpler to make
in model sizes and much cheaper to make when fitted to full sized engines as there are a lot less moving parts. |

We all like tech when it works but in my experience there is far to much reliance on the stuff.
... I expect the Victorians said the same about the horseless carriage. |
