In the last year or so I have been turning to You-Tube as a "go to" for ideas on how to.

Ok, there is a lot of garbage out there, but there is also a lot of good and interesting stuff. So maybe before embarking on one's own home spun idea of how to split the atom, perhaps google/youtube search the subject to see if others have already solved the problem. Certainly, for everyone who cannot sharpen a twist drill, you-tube has scores of methods, some good some not so good but together they are a hive of information.

I recently resurrected a 30 year old Airfix kit. Very rare and picked up on e-bay some 15 years ago. Some parts are damaged, apparently chewed by the previous owner's pet cat. You-tube. Subject "tricks with superglue". Apply drops of "superglue" to affected area and immediately cover with baking soda. The "superglue" goes rock hard within seconds. Clean up, apply more "superglue" then baking soda. Rub down, re contour with 600/1000 and 2000 wet & dry. Paint finished item.

I can see this could be a useful fix for any damaged dashboard switches or other small plastic bits.

I most definitely Youtube these days for tech help. Actually seeing someone else work through problems is really helpful.

In respect of filling plastic kit damage.....I have had success making polystyrene filler [a trick from another old hand]....by shaving bits of sprue, and the debris from sanding the plastic, and dissolving in drops of liquid styrene weld/cement [carbon Tetrachloride [dry cleaning fluid] was used once]....then the mess is applied to the gaps that need filling, squidged in [the liquid plastic cement also melts the surrounding plastic to effect a bond]....then left to dry. Sanding or filing to suit.

Also used to fill bad casting damage.

Cockpit canopies I used Johnson's Klear floor stuff [the old formula is best]...applied with a small paint brush, it flows by capillary action, dries quite quickly, and dries clear. It can also be used [with patience] to build up layers for flush glazing. I also used to paint it all over the completed kits, prior to applying decals [which like a gloss surface to stick to]...Once decals are dry, another coat of Klear....followed by a spray of matt varnish to flat it all down...the decal carrier film 'disappears' as a result.
A small quantity of Klear [cap-full?] mixed with dirty paintbrush washings [blacky browny yuch!]..when brushed over as a final coat after decalling, allows the dirty stuff to migrate into all the moulded panel lines, rivets, etc, bringing them out in stark relief...Finish with matt varnish [artists matt medium is good]...for that 'lived-in' look....My autistic son used to have Dad make up all sorts of plastic aircraft, mainly WW2 pacific theatre, japanese kits are good, off ebay...son loved Midway, Tora tora tora, etc is now studying film & media at college...The things we do for the kids, eh?

Johnsons Klear was also good as an instant bull refresher for boots in an emergency, but could give a blue tinge if used often.

and many more uses too.

There must be a very short list of products that can be used solely as intended.

I've put a few videos on YouTube. Not all about old cars and not all filmed in recent times.

Here’s one we made earlier - about 35 years earlier. A very much younger me and Audi rally team mates changing a gearbox in Oman Jordan on the roadside.

Youtube is a wonderful source of 'how to' knowledge, as well as a place to find entertainment of many descriptions.

The number of automotive themed films, both professional and amateur is huge and much browsing is enjoyed. I have even added a few of my own - https://www.youtube.com/user/roverp4driver/videos

I have used Youtube to find how to do those 'simple' jobs on modern cars- like replacing a tail-light bulb that requires some major dismantling of the car's rear end. When local shops no longer stocked traditional razor blades and stick of shaving soap, Youtube provided me with information and reviews on those products available in other countries so that I could then use that auction site to obtain them.

I enjoy the musicians and singers that compete on the 'Got Talent', X Factor and similar shows, and those shows are run in so many different countries. I especially like the youngsters who compete. Very entertaining! There are so many interesting things to select from to pass away a few enjoyable minutes ( or sometime hours) I would be up for huge expense if Youtube cost me by the hour.

I regularly use Youtube too for tips and advice on fixing things. Most recently yesterday, trying to establish whether our expired central heating pump is fixable or destined for the bin. Having now had a fiddle with it and established that it isn't seized, I suspect it'll be replaced.

Just thought I'd bump this thread back up.

Is anyone else here putting up Youtube videos, or have you done in the past? Perhaps with the lockdown affecting many people, thoughts turn to throwing up a few more vids to while away the time, especially if car work isn't feasible right now?

I did wonder about doing one or two from the Motor House, if time permits.

One thing my 8 year old boy is desperate to do is open a Youtube account, the deal is in the current time with him being home and not at school that I will open a youtube account and we can both upload things.

We have plenty of stop motion ideas planned out using either his Lego or his WW2 Cobi planes and tanks.

Look forward to seeing what you come up with. I know that junior wants to do more stop-motion vids, but right now with the quagmire that is battling with home-schooling, and the chaotic instructions we're supposed to be following (every subject is laid out differently on the school's servers that we have to log into remotely) I don't know when we'll get around to it.
