NEC CLASSIC THEME REVEALED AS ‘BUILT TO LAST’

The theme of this year’s Lancaster Insurance Classic Motor Show, with Discovery, has been revealed as ‘Built to Last’. Held at Birmingham’s NEC from Friday 9 to Sunday 11 November 2018, the clubs and exhibitors are invited to interpret the theme in any number of ways as they create amazing displays.

Acting Show Director Lee Masters explains the thinking behind this year’s theme choice: “We wanted a theme that paid tribute to the various elements of motoring but in particular the centenary of the end of World War 1, which falls on the final day of the show. If there is anything that sums up ‘Built to Last’, it’s the service men and women that ensured the safety and freedom of our country that we all enjoy today.”

As well as honouring the military and service personnel, the theme also affords itself to celebrating those marques that have also reached huge milestones such as 130 years of Rover, 120 years of Renault, and 110 years of the Ford Model T.

There are also those vehicles that have been ‘built to last’ so that they can be passed down from generation to generation, undertake epic journeys and challenges, and even remain on the roads to this day – some with their original drivers.

Lee added: “It is not only the show that is marking the impact of these thoroughbred cars as many manufacturers are now also looking to the cars of yesteryear for inspiration and protecting the heritage fleets for the enthusiasts of tomorrow.”

Dave Youngs, Car Club Manager for Lancaster Insurance, comments: ‘‘The theme can be interpreted in many ways and gives great scope for exhibitors to really make it their own. I work with clubs on a daily basis and admire each enthusiasts’ contribution, ensuring that our classic car community stays vibrant for future generations to enjoy. So along with celebrating marques, models and anniversaries, I can’t think of a better theme to showcase this passion and dedication which is undoubtedly built to last!”

As well as all the obvious ways the theme can be conveyed, the organisers have also come up with a few fun and family elements they hope to showcase too.

This year sees the 60th anniversary of LEGO, enjoyed by children and adults all over the world. With vehicles such as the Mini Cooper, Ferrari F50 and VW Beetle immortalised in the famous plastic brick, and new vehicles being released in the future, it is hoped to have some of them on display.

There are also plans to extend the theme into the various show feature areas including the Restoration Theatre, Discovery Live Stage, and Sporting Bears’ Dream Rides Garage.

Tickets are now on sale for the Lancaster Insurance Classic Motor Show, with Discovery, at Birmingham’s NEC from Friday 9 to Sunday 11 November.

NEC CLASSIC EXPANDS TO CREATE THE WORLD’S BIGGEST GATHERING OF CLASSIC MOTORING CLUBS.

The Lancaster Insurance Classic Motor Show, with Discovery, already the UK’s biggest indoor classic vehicle exhibition, is now even bigger for 2018! Adding an extra hall, the show is inviting even more clubs to display at the event to create the World’s biggest gathering of classic motoring clubs.

Held at Birmingham’s NEC from Friday 9 to Sunday 11 November, around 300 classic car and classic motorbike clubs will showcase vehicles owned by members, interpreting this year’s show theme of ‘Built to Last.’

Hall 8, which takes the overall show space to one million square feet (the equivalent of 18 full size football pitches) will be called The Debutant Hall as it will host 15 clubs that have never exhibited at the end of season finale ever before.

Acting Show Director Lee Masters explains: “The classic vehicle clubs are the DNA of the show so when we got the opportunity to increase to seven halls it gave us the chance to open the doors to those smaller niche clubs that haven’t had the chance to display their marques in previous years.

“What we didn’t realise was this also afforded us the accolade of being the World’s biggest gathering of classic motoring clubs representing so many different manufacturers and eras.”

The ‘Debutants’ include the Richard Burns RB5 and RB320 Memorial Club, Dorset Area Farina Owners, Perana Owners Club, and the Monoposto Racing Club. United Centos (Fiat Cinquecentos and Seicentos) will also make its debut alongside Club Calibra, Fordsport, MINI Y REGister, and Racing-Puma.co.uk.

The Austin Rover & MG Owners Club Sussex displays for the first time as does the Cannock and District Car Club, Chevettes n Kadetts, Fiat Coupé Club, RS500 Owners, and the Retro Caravan Club.

The show also welcomes back 25 clubs who missed last year’s event and ten more clubs that have not exhibited over the past two to six years. These include the Historic Marathon Rally Group, which will be celebrating 50 years since the London to Sydney Marathon Rally, the Aero Minx Register, Zastava and Yugo Owners Club and the Piper Sports and Racing Car Club.

Andrew Evanson, Senior Operations Manager at Lancaster Insurance, added: “I’m ecstatic that a larger number of clubs will be attending the show, giving us the opportunity to marvel at even more marques and models. Car clubs truly are the heartbeat of our industry and while having a close relationship with many, we are keen to support and work with more. I would like to extend a warm welcome to the debutants to the show and can’t wait to see the additional clubs on display!”

With around 40 additional clubs this year, the organisers are expecting the number of cars and bikes on show to top 3,000 vehicles, including those that are on display by the 650 specialist traders and dealers also taking part.

As well as all the popular features such as Silverstone Auctions sale, Sporting Bears’ Dream Rides, the Restoration Theatre, and Discovery Live Stage, the show also boasts the UK’s biggest indoor Autojumble and Classic Trader Village. Such is its popularity with visitors and traders alike, the space is already 80 per cent sold out.

The Lancaster Insurance Classic Motor Show returns to Birmingham’s NEC from Friday 9 to Sunday 11 November.

LANCASTER INSURANCE PRIDE OF OWNERSHIP – FIRST FIVE AUTUMN FINALISTS REVEALED.

The first five finalists in the coveted Autumn Final of the Lancaster Insurance Pride of Ownership have been revealed, with organisers facing tough decisions after receiving more entries than ever before.

Held at the Lancaster Insurance Classic Motor Show, with Discovery, nearly 100 classic car owners have applied for one of the 20 spots available at Birmingham’s NEC from Friday 9 to Sunday 11 November.

The first five finalists include Richard Pinkett and his 1939 MG TB, Michael Jones’ 1960 Jaguar MkII, Andy Nash’s 1966 Morris Mini Traveller, Mark Stewart’s 1988 Ford Escort XR3i Cabriolet, and Mandeep Sandhar and his 2000 Nissan Skyline.

Andrew Evanson, Senior Operations Manager of Lancaster Insurance, sponsors of the Pride of Ownership, said: “With each final, we see the bar raised in terms of the quantity and quality of the entries. The diversity of the display along with the fantastic stories and stunning cars makes it a real highlight of the show.”

Richard Pinkett’s stunning MG TB has a glorious racing pedigree having raced in club events since the 1960s, when it had been converted from the Tickford four-seater body to the standard two-seater. Still used for motorsport now, Richard prefers Hill Climbs although the car still graces many well-known circuits.

There’s a family connection between Michael Jones and his 1960 Jaguar MkII as his uncle was a test driver for the famous manufacturer and used to take him to see the cars as a boy. Michael said: I’ve got fond memories of those days spent in MkIIs and E-Types, so it was always in my blood to own a classic Jaguar. The styling of the MkII won it for me in the end, so I set out looking for a car I could restore.”

Finalists Andy Nash and Mark Stewart are both previous Meguiar’s Club Showcase finalists – with Andy winning in 2016. However, that’s not why their cars have been chosen.

Andy’s desire for a Mini Traveller came from his childhood memories of going out with his parent’s in their model. Named after his mother Betty, Andy did a 650mile round trip to buy the car even though it needed every nut and bolt replacing. Such was his investment of time and money, he set about making it the best model in the UK today.

The same has been said about Mark’s Escort XR3i Cabriolet, which has not only been praised by his peers in the motoring world but most recently also won the coveted Waxstock trophy.

Mandeep Sandhar’s Nissan Skyline is definitely a modern classic showcasing Japanese engineering. As the car’s sole owner, there is believed to be just two of these models in this specification and colour in the UK. With 29,000 miles on the clock, the model boasts a rare V-Spec 2 in 100 percent stock form which is another rarity.

With 15 places still to be decided, owners still have time to enter as the closing date is Friday 14thSeptember.

The winner and two runners up all receive trophies, with the overall winner offered the chance to display their car at the next event held by the organisers – as well as the obvious bragging rights.

All finalists receive two tickets for each of the show days, free parking throughout and a commemorative certificate.

Previous winners include Steve Mills’ skiff bodied 1926 Packard 420, followed by Stuart Turp’s 1969 Ford Capri Mk1, James Cribb’s 1989 Austin Metro City, Keith Edmund’s 1972 Triumph Spitfire, Simon McNamara’s 1983 VW Golf GTi Mk1, and most recently Paul Clappison’s 1972 MGB GT.

To enter, download an application form from www.necclassicmotorshow.comwhere you will also find the latest news and can buy show tickets.

If I could get a pass-out then I'd make this a two day event, it is simply huge. I always indulge in a Sporting Bears ride as well. I'll be there on the Saturday

Good shoes. That is the key

Agreed, just going on one day alone is pushing it really. If I go it'll probably be on the Friday.

WHO WILL WIN THE 2018 MEGUIAR’S CLUB SHOWCASE?
THE 16 FINALISTS REVEALED!

Once again, this year’s Meguiar’s Club Showcase has attracted a fantastic array of classics as the 16 finalists are revealed ahead of the Grand Final at the Lancaster Insurance Classic Motor Show, with Discovery, at Birmingham’s NEC from the 9-11 November.

The Porsche contingent is represented by Paul Howman’s 911 ‘993’ and the 356 of Ian Ellis, a deserved Super Class Winner at the Stanford Hall VW Show.

Amongst the finalists when it comes to German marques is Keith Bates’ BMW M3 E30, and the desirable Mercedes-Benz 250SL ‘Pagoda’ of Brian Ellis. Lyndon Creamer’s Volks World Best of Show winning Type 1 Beetle is yet another treat for show visitors.

A mouth-watering selection of British classics are guaranteed with five different marques represented. The Austin Mini of Ian Whitticase and David Fisher’s E-Type Jaguar will certainly draw a crowd, as will Nigel Scutt’s MG-F.

More tempting finalists include two Capris. The 2.8i Special of Gideon Mayers was a worthy recipient of the Capri Owners Club’s 1980’s Saloons award, while Barry Priestman’s Crayford Capri is a rare classic that will fascinate Ford enthusiasts.

Rounding off the British contingent is Tom Morley’s amazingly original Austin Allegro, the charmingly compact Austin A35 of Heather Walsh, and a fine example of the ever-popular Triumph TR5 owned by Simon Eaton.

No group of finalists would be complete without the world’s best-selling sports car which this year comes courtesy of Stephen Small’s Mazda MX-5. And we haven’t forgotten the USA. Barry Craven’s 1958 Chevrolet Impala is an attention-grabbing slice of classic Americana, and it will be joined by Phil Perry’s show-winning 1934 Ford Pick Up.

“With such an exceptional line-up, this year’s competition is going to be one of the toughest yet,” said Show Director Lee Masters. “The Meguiar’s Club Showcase always draws a hugely enthusiastic crowd and we can guarantee they are in for a real treat, thanks to the passion and commitment of the owners.”

The cars will be examined by an expert panel of judges over the course of the show with the winner announced on Sunday afternoon by Wheeler Dealers’ Mike Brewer.

FBHVC JOINS WITH KING DICK TOOLS TO LAUNCH HERITAGE RANGE AT NEC CLASSIC.

- FBHVC and King Dick launch AKD Heritage Collection
- Press launch on Fri 9 Nov at 11.30am on FBHVC stand 5-980 - by Discovery Live Stage.
- Two rare Abingdon Engineering Motorcycles on display
- Book signing by Bill Whiteley on stand Friday 9 Nov at 12noon and 3pm

The Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs has joined with King Dick Tools to launch its new AKD Heritage Collection at the Lancaster Insurance Classic Motor Show, with Discovery.

Starting out as Abingdon Engineering and manufacturing a range of components and motorcycles, the company began making high quality tools. Adopting the ‘King Dick’ name - after the company owner’s bulldog – it is the only remaining spanner manufacturer in the UK and has maintained proud links with Birmingham since 1856.

The Heritage Collection will be formally launched on the FBHVC stand in Hall 5 at 11.30am on Friday 9 November. With a design inspired by the original tools, they are produced using state-of-the-art materials and processes and feature a tough, chrome-molybdenum finish. Harking back to a time when prestigious cars of the 1950s and 1960s were equipped with King Dick tools, the new range will be a great addition to any toolbox.

As part of the launch, the FBHVC stand will showcase two motorcycles that were both made by Abingdon Engineering. The 1910 Kerry-Abingdon 3½ hp machine was amongst the first to feature a livery that celebrated the collaboration between the Abingdon Works and the East London Rubber Company. Following light restoration in 2005, the bike currently resides at the Brooklands Museum in Surrey.

The 1930 Abingdon King Dick Model 40 features a 300cc side-valve engine and is one of only two known to survive with this particular engine. First registered to the Viking Cycle Co. of Wolverhampton on 30 January 1930, it was discovered in a cellar in the West Country where it had been laid up since the beginning of World War Two. Now fully restored it is currently on display at the London Motorcycle Museum.

Both of these superb machines are owned by Bill Whiteley and he will be signing copies of his book - ‘The Quest for King Dick’ - on the FBHVC stand at 12 noon and 3.00pm on Friday 9 November.

To celebrate the launch of the AKD Heritage Collection visitors to the show can enter a competition for the chance to win an exclusive bespoke King Dick Toolkit prize. Entries can be made by visiting the website https://www.necclassicmotorshow.com/win-exclusive-classic-motor-show-toolbox and answering a simple question. The winner will be presented with the prize at the show. The closing date is Sunday 4 November

Visit King Dick and the FBHVC in Hall 5 of the Lancaster Insurance Classic Motor Show, with Discovery.

BENTLEY DRIVERS CLUB MAKES NEC CLASSIC DEBUT.

This year’s Lancaster Insurance Classic Motor Show, with Discovery, marks the debut of The Bentley Drivers Club, and visitors are assured of a very special display that represents both the fine cars and the marque’s aviation history at Birmingham’s NEC from 9-11 November.

A star of the stand, and of television, will be the 1929 4½ Litre saloon that carries the name ‘The Grey Lady’. With styling that manages to be both elegant and imposing it perfectly embodies the Bentley ethos, and it will also be familiar to fans of hit shows such as Downton Abbey and Peaky Blinders having made appearances in both.

Catering for enthusiasts of more recent models is the striking 2008 Bentley Continental GT Zagato. One of only nine made - and one of only two in the UK - it was the first collaboration between the legendary Italian coachbuilder and this most British of car makers, and the result is undoubtedly striking.

For fans of aviation and war time history, there is another great reason to visit the Club’s stand as it will be an opportunity to get a close look at an historic aircraft engine. In recognition of the centenary of the end of World War 1 visitors will be able to see a genuine BR2 aero engine. The BR stands for Bentley Rotary and the engine was fitted to the Sopwith Camel and Sopwith Snipe fighter aircraft. An incredible piece of engineering, it is a fascinating reminder of the skills of company founder, WO Bentley.

“We are extremely proud to welcome the Bentley Drivers Club to this year’s show” says Event Director Lee Masters. “Displaying examples of the fine engineering that characterise this great British marque, we are sure that visitors will be thrilled to see this new addition.”

The Bentley Drivers Club, which takes pride of place in Hall 1, was founded more than 80 years ago, and caters for all models from the earliest Cricklewood cars to those built at Crewe.

The Lancaster Insurance Classic Motor Show, with Discovery, is the World’s largest gathering of classic motoring clubs with around 300 in attendance over the three-day show and 3,000 vehicles on display.

There were so many landmarks to celebrate at this year’s Lancaster Insurance Classic Motor Show, with Discovery. Over 71,000 attendees headed for Birmingham’s NEC over the weekend for the world’s biggest gathering of classic motoring clubs

Acting Show Director Lee Masters said: “This was a landmark year for the show in so many ways; The biggest in size, the most ever cars, and reaching 300 clubs to make it the World’s biggest gathering of classic motoring clubs. But also as it took place on Armistice Day and it was an honour to see so many clubs pay tribute.

This year’s show theme was ‘Built to Last’ and as expected, the clubs and displays interpreted this is so many different ways – from the Veteran Car Clubs stunning ‘Coming Home’ tribute to the end of the Great War, to a fantastic mix of heritage models against their most modern counterpart on the Renault, Alpine, and BMW club stands.

“It’s been fantastic seeing the array of classics on display including Rob Sargent’s Pride of Ownership winning 1969 Ford Cortina Savage Mk2. A huge well done to everyone involved in creating some amazing stands and a weekend that has truly made memories that are ‘Built to Last’.”

Sporting Bears’ Dream Rides raised £31,600 offering around 1,000 rides in exchange for a donation to children’s charities.

Silverstone Auctions saw £4million including buyer’s premium with 61% of the lots were sold at the weekend which will increase with post show sales.
