Hi all,

Sad to read that the founder of the Haynes workshop manual has passed away at the age of 80.

We are close to Sparkford so our local press and radio has gone quite in depth on his passing, he did a lot in his life and I take my hat off to him.

Wasn't his first book about Ford-based specials?

Ah yes that's the one Smile I've a few contemporary books on special building but I'm not sure I've snaffled a copy of JH's book as yet.

Haynes' books, not just manuals, still take up a lot of space in my bookcase. John Haynes was a very friendly and genuine man who I had the pleasure of meeting several times when I lived not far from Sparkford. RIP John - and thank you for all the skinned knuckles...

RIP John Haynes.....
I always used a Haynes Manual where I could, and classic world owes him a big thanks for producing a manual at a fraction of the cost of a Manufacturer product.

Very sad to hear, generations of impecunious (aka 'skint') motorists owe him a debt of gratitude.

Now cars are both more complex and more reliable things are different but for many years the first thing you did when buying a car was to get 'The Haynes' for it.

I reckon the first manual I bought was to change the crank on my Dad’s MK1 Sprite in 1963 or thereabouts. Did it in a morning, but I was seventeen then.

Sadly departed but his products will be of great assistance to many a car owner, to say nothing of his manuals about other more obscure forms of transport … I've got the one's on the Tiger tank, Routemaster bus & Norman the pensioner Laughing

I must admit to not using a Haynes manual for years now, our go to has recently become Youtube.
I still keep the Haynes manuals for all the cars I have owned.

Before fleabay came along I remember it was common to get a Haynes manual "thrown in" on the deal when buying an older car. Does that still happen, I wonder?

My dad, being tight fisted, has kept every one for the many cars he has owned over the last 40-odd years. There is a shelf full of them in his garage, including 2 for Morris Marina, even though he's never owned one.
