MORE CLUBS THAN EVER ON SHOW AS NEC RESTORATION SHOW CONTINUES TO EXPAND.

Next year’s Practical Classics Classic Car & Restoration Show, with Discovery, is set to be a record breaker as it will be the biggest yet! Another hall is being added, increasing the show by 20 per cent, to provide more space for new classic car clubs and those clubs who want to do more live working at the show.

Some 175 clubs will attend the three day event held at Birmingham’s NEC from 22-24 March 2019. Of those confirmed, 13 clubs appearing are making their spring debut at the show.

Acting Show Director Lee Masters said: “This is the fastest growing motor show in the UK which proves just how much interest there is, not only in the classic car market, but in owners wanting to look after their own cars. As well as advice and expertise on restoration, we aim to also provide valuable knowledge on how to maintain and service your own vehicles which can save owners time and money in the future.”

Ford fans will be well catered for with the Ford AVO Owners Club continuing the 50thanniversary celebrations of the Escort Mexico by displaying an ex-press car that is undergoing restoration. The Mk1-5 Cortina Owners Club celebrate its 30thyear with a stand featuring a fully restored Mk 4 Cortina 2.3S believed to be the only one on UK roads.

The Tickford Owners Club celebrates 50 years of the Ford Capri with a superb mix of project and restored cars. The RS500 Owners community pay tribute to the brilliant driver, Rudi Eggenberger, who sadly passed away this year. His exploits in the Cosworth RS500 touring car were legendary and the stand features one of his racers.

For something a little more unusual, the Retro Caravan Club stand is a must-visit. Displaying caravans at different stages of restoration, including a barn-find example, visitors can watch repairs being made to one during the show.

Staying with the unusual theme, the Buckler Register enthusiastically promotes these fascinating British sports cars, and show-goers can watch members build an example from a bare chassis to a running car and admire a Buckler 90 that has never been on the road. And remember the tiny Peel P50 hailing from the Isle of Man? The Peel Owners Club will attempt to build one during the show.

British cars are also well represented amongst the debutantes, including the MG Car Club’s Young Members Group. Highlights of the Group’s stand include an MGB GT in daily use, a barn find MGA Coupe, and an MG ZT-T in concours condition. And be sure to visit the 1100 Club which will be showcasing maintenance and restoration work alongside fascinating technical displays.

For more Britishness, the Rover Coupe Owners Club is marking 20 years since the end of Coupe production and 30 years since the launch of the R8 platform that underpinned the stylish sports car. A very early, pre-release press car is a highlight of the stand and restoration work will begin at the show. With numerous Vauxhall anniversaries to be celebrated - including 30 years of the Calibra coupe - visitors should head to the Vauxhall Bedford Opel Association stand.

German marques are well represented, too, with the Quattro Owners Club displaying the first ever UK model that requires restoration. Visitors to the Scirocco Register stand can enjoy the 45thanniversary of the Mk 1 model and admire one of the earliest cars in existence, a 1974 Scirocco TS.

Anyone going?
Spent a fun couple of hours recently unearthing a 1937 one family owned Jowett 10 hp (4 cylinder) from where it had lain undisturbed since 1981. It will be on show in the "Barn Finds" section of thois year's show.

THE NATIONAL CAR CLUB AWARDS, IN ASSOCIATION WITH TOURISM IRELAND, TO HONOUR JOHN HAYNES AND BARRIE WHIZZO WILLIAMS

This year’s National Car Club Awards, in association with Tourism Ireland, will honour two legends of the motoring community as the Judges have bestowed two posthumous Special Recognition Awards to John Haynes, founder of the Haynes Manuals, and racing driver Barrie ‘Whizzo’ Williams.

Awards Panel Chairman Lee Masters said: “In the past year, the classic motoring community has lost two giants. The judging panel were unanimous in their desire to see both John Haynes and ‘Whizzo’ honoured by the community they both contributed so much to.”

The Judges Special Recognition Awards will be presented at a prize giving dinner held on Saturday 23 March at the NEC alongside the Practical Classics Classic Car & Restoration Show, with Discovery. Over the course of the evening, 18 awards will be presented to UK car clubs and their devoted members, including these two honours. John Haynes passed away in February 2019 while Barrie ‘Whizzo’ Williams died in September 2018 after a short illness.

“John Haynes’ immense contribution is multi-faceted and his legacy is permanent,” explains Practical Classics editor and awards judge Danny Hopkins. “John’s extraordinary gift to the owners of all cars, classic and modern… facilitating their ability to be self-sufficient cannot be underestimated. The Haynes manual is an icon… just like many of the cars, planes, ships and trains it taught us how to repair. John’s life in cars has also left us with another legacy. His creation of one of the world’s most exciting car collections, a collection he so generously shared with the nation at the Haynes International Motor Museum: it is his passion made metal.

“Add to all of this the fact that John was a gentleman in the truest sense of the word, and you will understand why he will be so sorely missed by so many people. You will not find anyone who could say a bad word about him. In fact, I will leave the last word to Chris Scudds, Commercial Director of the Haynes International Motor Museum: “Whenever you had a conversation with John, you always walked away a couple of inches taller.”

Barrie ‘Whizzo’ Williams was a proud member of the British Racing Drivers’ Club, bringing unfailing enthusiasm and dedication to his role as President (and latterly, Brand Ambassador) of the British Motorsport Marshalls Club.

Acquiring the nickname thanks to his flamboyant and entertaining driving style, Barrie’s career spanned more than 50 years and encompassed just about every form of top-level motorsport. Even after he retired from professional racing, Barrie still raced at historic and classic events as well as becoming more involved in the classic car club scene, regularly appearing on stage at both of the NEC shows to share his knowledge and anecdotes.

The presentation of these awards is bound to be a highlight of the evening along with a short address from honoured guest Lord Steel of Aikwood, President of the Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs, Member of the House of Lords and the All Party Parliamentary Historic Vehicles Group.

Lord Steel’s passion for historic vehicles embraces many, latterly a Jaguar Mk2 and Morris Minor, and currently a Wolseley 1500 Mk3. He also enjoys competing in historic rallies with some success in the 1993 and 1994 Monte Carlo Challenge as well as the 1998 Winter Challenge. He is perhaps best remembered for competing in the 1998 London to Cape Town (Damascus to Cape Town) Endurance Rally in an Austin Gipsy with André Tammes – winning a Bronze Medal, Blue Riband and finishing 3rd in Class.

THE VOTES ARE IN! FINAL SIX CARS REVEALED AS VOTING REOPENS FOR TITLE OF RESTORER OF THE YEAR

The final six cars chosen by enthusiasts in the battle for the coveted accolade of Restorer of the Year have been revealed as voting reopens. The outright winner will be announced at the Practical Classics Classic Car & Restoration Show, with Discovery, held at Birmingham’s NEC from 22-24 March.

Classic car enthusiasts were asked to choose from sixteen finalists, each of which had featured as ‘Reader Restorations’ in Practical Classics over the past 12 months. The votes produced a shortlist of the final six entries, which will be on display at the show, and from now until 21 March, enthusiasts are invited to vote again for the outright winner. All votes already received will be carried over and new votes can be cast here https://www.necrestorationshow.com/restorer-year-final-voting

Acting Show Director Lee Masters said: “All 16 entries would have been deserving winners and the close results of the voting show just what a tough decision it was, but we now have our final six. The owners have done an amazing job in restoring their cars and I can’t wait to see which one is going to be crowned this year’s Restorer of the Year.”

Of the six finalists, five are represented by British marques and each of the restorations have been the result of exceptional effort and dedication by their proud owners. From first-time restorers to unique cars, enthusiasts face the difficult task of choosing from some amazing stories.

The only non-British car in the final six is Paul Henley’s superb 1974 Datsun 240Z, a car he acquired back in September 1998. Having owned Datsuns in the 1980s he always fancied one of these impressive sports cars, and chose one as his first restoration. Family commitments meant that work didn’t start in earnest until 2013, but the results are nothing short of stunning.

Long-time Rootes Group fan, Will Goldsmith, bought his 1968 Sunbeam Alpine GT for just £150 and restored it to concours condition on a tight budget. A self-confessed perfectionist, he learnt plenty of new skills along the way, and admits to finding the whole project to be incredibly satisfying.

The 1990 MG Maestro Turbo, car number 436 of the 505 built, is owned by Peter Cooper who worked as a British Leyland engineer for 17 years. Buying the car in spring 2014, he wasn’t expecting a full restoration but the MG was in a poor state and bringing it back to perfect condition took around two and a half years.

It was Andy Barron’s wife, Danni, who fancied a summer runabout and they soon discovered that the seemingly-sound 1966 Triumph Spitfire they had bought was anything but. A full restoration was the only option, and with a huge amount of corrosion to deal with it would take 18 months of hard work before Danni could take to the road.

Steve and Dee Potter love their classic Triumphs and have restored two TR models in the past. Their 1968 Triumph TR250 was an ex-USA left-hand drive example and it took the dedicated couple just thirteen months to transform the rusty wreck into a car that any enthusiast would be proud of.

The final entry is Gerry Lloyd’s 2016 Rover 75 Coupe. Although a Coupe was unveiled as a concept in 2004 it never went into production, and Gerry liked it so much he decided to build his own. With the project taking around 2500 hours to complete, it is no surprise that the finished Rover receives so much interest.

The winner will be announced on the Restorer of the Year stand on the morning of Friday 22 March by Practical Classics editor Danny Hopkins and Wheeler Dealers’ Mike Brewer.

WINNERS CELEBRATED AT THE NATIONAL CAR CLUB AWARDS, IN ASSOCIATION WITH TOURISM IRELAND.

The winners of the 2019 National Car Club Awards, in association with Tourism Ireland, were revealed at a glittering awards dinner, hosted by Wheeler Dealers’ Mike Brewer on Saturday 23 March, celebrating the best of the UK classic motoring club scene.

Awards judging panel chairman Lee Masters said: “This year was the toughest in terms of judging in all categories as there were so many strong contenders on the shortlist. The atmosphere in the room on the night was incredible and the support and gratitude for all the winners was immeasurable. Congratulations to all our very worthy winners.”

The first six accolades presented were the ‘At Show’ awards given to the clubs exhibiting at the Practical Classics Classic Car & Restoration Show, with Discovery, and chosen by the panel of Judges.

The Best Club Display went to the Austin Counties Car Club for the small stand section and the MX-5 Owners Club for the large stand section. Best Live Working on Vehicles was awarded to the Ford Corsair Owners Club while Best Live Demonstration on a Club Stand went to The Riley R.M. Club. The Best Restored Car was the 1928 Hoyal Bodied Triumph Super Seven owned by Brian Bromwich of the Pre-1940s Triumph Motor Club. The Best Car at Show was deemed to be Sir Malcolm Campbell’s Armstrong Siddeley Hurricane that is being restored by the Armstrong Siddeley Owners Club.

It was then time for the Classic Car Club categories with the Gay Classic Car Group winning National Car Club of the Year. Outstanding Club Magazine of the Year was awarded to Spirit & Speed from the Rolls-Royce Enthusiasts’ Club while the trophy for Outstanding Online Presence by a Car Club was presented to the MG Car Club.

The Daimler SP250 Club won the Best Car Club Contribution to Charity for raising £24,000 for Saint Francis Hospice, while Outstanding Club initiative to Encourage the Next Generation was awarded to the National Traction Engine Trust on the 40th anniversary of its Steam Apprentice Club.

Outstanding Car Club Single Venue Event or Show went to Simply Mustang UK for its debut event, creating the biggest single gathering of this model on UK soil. Outstanding Car Club Run, Rally or Tour was given to the creators of the Poppy Returns Home Tour, the Fiat 500 Club UK.

In the Devoted Member category of awards, the National Car Club Unsung Hero of the Year was Graham Le Lay from the Jersey Old Motor Club, while Ambassador of the Year was bestowed on Kevin Price of the Volvo Enthusiasts Club. Young Member of the Year went to Benjamin Crosby from Racing-Puma.co.uk who is not even old enough to drive yet.

The National Car Club Lifetime Achievement honour was presented to Graham Robson of the TR Register for his 25 years as President of his club but at the age of 83, he shows no signs of taking a back seat. Graham is known to the wider classic community for 130 books he has written about classics.

The Judge’s Special Recognition award was posthumously bestowed on both John Haynes, the genius founder of the Haynes Manual, and racing driver extraordinaire Barrie ‘Whizzo’ Williams. John's award was collected by son Chris Haynes while Barrie's was given to his racing co-driver Andy 'Ace' Harrison.

Founded in 2016, the awards celebrate the UK classic car clubs, which are the heart and soul of the classic motoring community, and the people that are the backbone, constantly working to attract new members and offering unwavering support to fellow owners.

Supported by Classic Car Weekly and endorsed by the Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs (FBHVC), the 2019 judging panel included David Boyce from main sponsor Tourism Ireland and David Whale, Chairman of the Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs (FBHVC).

SPRING SUNSHINE BRINGS CARS, STARS AND ENTHUSIASTS TO THE NEC RESTORATION SHOW.

· Show welcomed 28,846 attendees (28,151 in 2018)

· 20 percent increase on floorspace compared to 2018

· 174 Classic Motoring clubs in attendance (149 in 2018

· Winners included Datsun 240Z, VW Type 2 Deluxe and a BMW E9

This year’s Practical Classics Classic Car & Restoration Show, with Discovery, was bigger and better in every way with more halls, more clubs and more visitors than ever before.

With 20 per cent more floorspace and 174 motoring clubs, 25 more clubs than the previous year, a whopping 28,846 attendees (28,151 in 2018) enjoyed live working, demonstrations and over 1,300 display vehicles.

Show Director Lee Masters said: “Once again the classic car community has exceeded all expectations and helped to create a fantastic three-day festival of everything motoring. The time and effort the clubs put into their displays, especially with the live working, is incredible and we are in awe of what they achieve.

“This show continues to go from strength to strength, even in uncertain times, and we thank everyone involved – partners, sponsors, traders and visitors – in helping to make this the best show to date.”

There were many awards presented over the three-day NEC Show. Paul Henly and his superb 1974 Datsun 240Z was voted by Practical Classics readers as the Restorer of the Year. Paul acquired back in September 1998 and having owned Datsuns in the 1980s he always fancied one of these impressive sports cars and chose one as his first restoration. The ‘Golden Spanner’ trophy was presented by editor Danny Hopkins and Wheeler Dealers’ Mike Brewer.

Mike was also on hand to reveal the results of the fiercely contested Lancaster Insurance Pride of Ownership competition. Visitors had voted all three days for their favourite out of the 20 classics on display and it was John Smith’s 1964 Volkswagen Type 2 Deluxe Microbus that took the winning spot by just 16 votes. Second place went to Ian Thompson’s striking 1971 Ford Escort MK1 Mexico while Tom Morley’s 1989 Austin Metro 1.3L came third.

Over on the Carole Nash Barn Find display, it was Steve Cato’s 1973 BMW E9 CSL that won the audience’s hearts and votes to be crowned Barn Find of the Show. There was stiff competition in the display of 20 rusting relics which included a 1958 Bedford CA Tipper, a 1938 Jowett 10 Saloon, and a 1962 Renault 8.

The Sporting Bears Motor Club saw their fundraising efforts through the popular ‘Dream Rides’ create £15,700 for children’s charities across the UK. The Dream Rides Garage saw the return of the stunning traction engine that never stopped giving rides around the outside of the halls all weekend.

The other vehicle running by the end of the show was the Triumph TR6 that was restored by the team on the Practical Classics Live Stage. The stage was a bustle of special guests and car parades all weekend.

TV motoring celebrities attending included Wheeler Dealers’ Mike Brewer, Car SOS’ Fuzz Townshend and Tim Shaw, Salvage Hunters: Classic Cars duo Drew Pritchard and Paul Cowland, The Car Years’ Vicki Butler-Henderson and Alex Riley, the guys from Lazy Boy Garage, and actor turned racing driver Kelvin Fletcher.

CLASSIC CAR LOAN PROJECT - PRESS RELEASE.
March 21st 2019.

CLASSIC CAR LOAN “WINNERS” ANNOUNCED
AT THE NEC RESTORATION SHOW.

The Classic Car Loan Project, now in a third year of encouraging newcomers to the classic vehicle community, is pleased to announce the car drivers who will be looking after a classic for the year.

The ‘winners’ were announced on the Live Stage at the Practical Classics Classic Car & Restoration Show at the NEC on Sunday in advance of what will be, for them, an exciting year.

Each of the loan cars, generously offered into the project by private owners and car clubs, will be in the care of a younger enthusiast for the year.

The cars will be officially handed over in April at a special event at The British Motor Museum where a driving area has been set aside for the initial driving experience before the new drivers take to the open road.

The cars and new drivers are:
1929 Ford Model A Phaeton – Liam Stafford (Newport)
1933 Austin 7 Saloon - Eddie Storer (Market Rasen)
1934 Morgan Super Sports - Scott Davies (Derby)
1949 Alvis TA – Josh Bennett (Banbury)
1954 Ford Popular – Rachel Cook (Leeds)
1956 Ford Anglia – Harrison Smith (Northants)
1960 Vauxhall Victor – George Turner ( Halstead)
1968 Morris Minor Traveller – Richard Sanders (Orpington)
1969 Morris Minor Saloon – TBC
1983 Austin Maestro – Max Bresnahan (Maidstone)
1988 Volvo 240 Estate – Jared Joubert (Staffs)
3 other cars to follow later in the year.

Long-standing project supporter Peter James Insurance is contributing to the insurance for each loan car, with policies protecting both owner and new driver in a specially prepared arrangement.
Cheryl Maybury, Director at PJI, said: “Encouraging newcomers to the classic vehicle community is so important and that’s why we are delighted to support this growing project. We are thoroughly looking forward to hearing the stories from this round of loan car ‘borrowers’ throughout the year.”

Project manager bob Wilkinson said: “I am looking forward to seeing all our planning come to fruition when the cars are handed over to these new enthusiasts. Individual owners and clubs have given magnificent support to the project by firstly offering their cars and then preparing them ready to be used and enjoyed over the year. I am also grateful to have massive support from Peter James Insurance, which increases confidence for all involved in the project.”

Other sponsors are The British Motor Museum along with Duckham’s Oils and Longstone Tyres who are supplying consumer items for each car.
