The above thread deteriorates into a discussion about fire extinguishers but the main point is that you should not test a new wiring installation by connecting it to a car battery.

I always connect a current limited power supply first so a short circuit simply shuts down the power and no damage is done. If you don't have a power supply (or even a battery charger) then at least check for shorts with an ohmeter.

Quite a sad tale indeed.
I suspect a lot of older cars have crusty wiring, a lot of the ones I see have them awful blue wiring connectors too.
Your idea of a current limiting device is worth heeding.
