I once worked at a small coach, waggin company who had a couple of VALs..one, a Duple body, the other a Plaxton body. [around '79 to '82?]
These had quite a high seating capacity [51-plus, as I recall]....
Aside from the obvious difference in chassis, the VAL also ran on smaller diameter wheels than 'normal' in those days.
This was a boone when cleaning & mopping out...as the floor was free from encumbrances such as wheel arches [which could trap dirt]...
The brakes...whilst OK for 'normal' use, would struggle when descending the North York Moors towards Castleton, with a full load of school kids....there was little 'give' in the brake pedal..little in the way of a 'servo' effect, thus one had to have a Bradley Wiggins-style right leg.
A very comfy ride....due no doubt to the twin steer axles...whereby one would support the bus if the other was rattled into a pothole....
On the whole, I liked them....even if the gear ratios were rather far apart. _________________ Dellow Mk2, 1951 built, reg 1952.

Hi
I know it is difficult to reconcile B/W photos with coloured ones but that paint job appears to fit with this 1971 one.

The bright work above the main grill possibly just replacing the Moseley sign.
There is a link to a later picture which has further info (May be where Richard got his) _________________ Bristols should always come in pairs.

I like those Studebakers.....although I only now about them [at the time] from the Dinky Toy version..
I also have a liking for the base model versions of all cars.....so much simpler, cheaper to run, etc... _________________ Dellow Mk2, 1951 built, reg 1952.

Also added today, to the toys section, a page for the Frankonia/TOMY "Ol' MacDonald's Farm Truck" of the 1970s. Maybe based on a Commer?
