Pre-war caravanners might like this update on the main site, relating to a '39 Winchester Imp.

9/3/12 Included amongst some period shots of an F-Type Vauxhall Victor added to this page, are two showing the car with a small caravan - can anyone confirm the make of 'van? Sprite maybe?

thanks, R

That's a 1956-1959 Sprite Ariel. It was designed for the then new VW Beetle and was something of a sensation in Europe. Strangely, it was never launched in the UK at the time but so many people were importing them that in late 1957 Sprite finally produced a UK model.

Just 10ft long, it squeezed four berths into it - a double at the back (4ft dinette by day) and a 6ft single at the front with a hammock style bunk above. It was extremely basic with only one gas lamp and a twin burner hob/grill provided as standard spec! It was the forerunner to the Sprite 400, which came along in 1960. They basically took the Ariel and shaved over 100kgs off it, which was mostly achieved by giving the 400 a half steel, half wooden chassis. The idea was kept until 1965 when the 400 regained a full steel chassis like the Ariel had. Ironically, the Ariel name re-appeared in 1976 to replace the Sprite 400.

The original Ariel is a very rare caravan now, not many about at all. I know of just two surviving. I'd love to find one and add it too my collection, best get searching some hedge rows!
