a simple points change today turned into a longer job, when i undid the screw for the points there was a slight twang and something moved, when i came to start it it would not start i had to retime it? never had that before!
i reckon the screw was too long and it sat on the plate underneath the points mount and stopped it moving freely, one reason why the manual adjuster seemed tight and not willing to move.
all seems ok now.

Whenever you adjust the points you are altering the timing, normally not by a huge amount, if the timing was correct the last time the points were adjusted it should be right when they are readjusted.

Yes, sounds like the screw was too long and was fouling the mechanical advance mechanism.
