Hi Ray. Damage to rods and main bearing bores is rectified by grinding mating faces and re-boring to the standard size. More common on conrods as the shells there are more susceptible to spinning, economics are simple, whereas with a block it might be cheaper to replace the block.

When I worked at an engine reconditioner's, a re-ground crank had undersized bearings, re-bored cylinders had oversized pistons. Fords sometimes came with blocks that were bored .015 over size for the main bearings, this was simply referred to as backing

Indeed so. Why then are replacement bearings on the market today available in a series of oversizes?

I don't very often work on an engine nowadays (retired) when I do its American. I have just ordered bearings .010, .020, whatever no mention of under size or over size not had any problems
