The gates of the Britannia Royal Naval College were thrown open to the public on Saturday 27th July 2019. This was a rare opportunity for the public to see where naval officers are trained – not just officers of the Royal Navy, but from navies all over the world. It was a hot, sunny day, and the event attracted a large crowd.
In the College grounds, there were displays from the military motorsport teams. The Peugeot 106 Turbo of Steve Hutchings forms part of the 7 car Royal Navy Royal Marines Car Racing Team. There is a dedicated Armed Forces Race Challenge series which races at all the UK’s major race tracks.
Representing motorsport on two wheels, the Yamaha R6 of Alan Curtis was on display. Alan is part of the Royal Navy Royal Marines Road Racing Team and he finished second in the 2018 Royal Navy Championship which races at all the UK circuits.
The public were allowed to wander the corridors of the college and officer cadets were on hand taking groups around on guided tours. The layout of the building is aligned to that of a ship - the original Britannia Naval College was an old naval warship moored on the river Dart and used from 1863. The current College was opened in 1905.
On the parade ground, the navy and marines demonstrated their combat skills and weaponry. An Airbus H135 Juno helicopter of the Defence Helicopter Flying School based at RAF Shawbury was also on display. These helicopters are used to train all 3 armed forces. The Royal Marine band provided their usual colourful display of music and marching.
Through the CSMA (Civil Service Motoring Association) the Porsche Owners Club were invited to enter 5 cars into a car show held in the College grounds – I was very pleased to show my 911 Carrera. In addition to Porsche, the West Country Ferrari Owners Club also had 6 cars on display. High end car dealership HR Owen brought along a McLaren 650S and there was also a Lamborghini Huracan LP640-4. The remainder of the display was made up of CSMA members cars and included examples from MG, Austin Healey, Jaguar and other marques and a few motor bikes.
