Those who have recently come across it please defer until others have given their guesses.

No idea, but it puts me in mind something very common I don't need to mention... I feel there's an interesting story coming here Smile

Well done Alistair! Yes, when Jaguar took over Daimler they looked into dealing with the more iffy aspects of the SP250 and ended up taking elements of the MGB and Sunbeam Alpine styling amongst other things. Other problems were scuttle shake, noisy engine and weak gearbox. All in all they just didn't think it was worth the effort given that they had just released the E type.

Other than the grille area, which looks a bit clunky, I like the look of that a lot.

I agree, Rick. At risk of being drummed off the forum, I think it is much more stylish than the E type. Smile

I agree....much more stylish than the E-type, indeed.

This Daimler has the same appeal to me as the Reliant Sabre 6...which, to my jaundiced eyes, looked better than the later Scimitars...

Also, the Turner?

Interesting story, I imagined it might have been an upmarket reworking of an MGB. IMO the styling holds up pretty well today.

When Daimler was taken over by Jaguar they inherited the 2.5 litre V8 engine which was in the SP250. Being rather a compact engine it could have been used in other cars but William Heynes supported his XK engine and set out to prove that the V8 wasn't suitable, So he sent his son, Jonathan, out in the Daimler with the instruction to drive it flat out in second from Coventry to Stratford and back. The engine survived, so he was then told to do it again in first. This time the engine did not survive. No further proof necessary, so the Daimler engine became quietly shelved.

Can't be entirely true, as there were some 17,000 V8 saloons produced up to 1969.

I think the point was, how the British motor industry went down the pan[compared to pre-WW2] as much because of politics within, than for any other reason...

I've been a Rover V8 enthusiast for many years, but always felt that BMC/BL missed a golden opportunity by ditching the Daimler V8. I never worked on one, but drove a few cars with it in, and thought it was delightful.
