I'm a moderator on a fire brigade related web site and this is a "copy & paste" post from a senior London Fire & Rescue Service officer describing events as they unfolded -

...................................................................................................................................................................................
I think that is (Miraculously for the busiest Airspace in the World and the second busiest Airport) the biggest incident at Heathrow since the 1973 crash?

We had quite a PDA* on it.
6 Pumps, 3 Fire Rescue Units (2 for USAR) 3 USAR modules, 1 Hose Layer, 1 Bulk Foam Unit, 1 CU.
1 DO and 2 ADO's as Incident coomand, 1 ADO Hazmat, 1 ADO USAR, 1 ADO Press
1 DAC mobilised himself as Monitoring officer and AC Brown informed as remote monitoring

1st IC asked for additional BFU and additional CU for marshalling.

1st informative; (2.05 approximately. Scotty)
From WM***** A BA BOEING 777 CRASHED ON LANDING, NO FIRE AT PRESENT, 136 PASSENGERS AND 16 CREW SAFELY EVACUATED VIA ESCAPE CHUTE, FOAM BLANKETS BEING LAID BY AIRPORT FIRE SERVICE, LFB PERSONNEL ASSISTING, INFORM TAKE APPLIANCES TO HOLD AT RVP SOUTH AND AWAIT FURTHER INSTRUCTIONS ~~

Latest informative.... (this was at 2.20 this afternoon. Scotty)

From GM ****** APPROX 5 TONNES OF AVIATION FUEL REPORTED STILL IN AIRCRAFT AND LEAKING FROM DAMAGED FUEL TANKS CONSTANT FOAM BLANKETS BEING LAID BY AIRPORT FIRE SERVICE. LONDON FIRE BRIGADE BULK FOAM UNIT AND HOSE LAYER IN USE TACTICAL MODE OSCAR ~~
......................................................................................................................................................................................................

*PDA = Pre Determined Attendance.
USAR = Urban Search & Rescue.
CU = Control Unit.

The fact there were 5 tonnes of fuel still in the aircraft dispells the theory that it had run out of fuel. This was one of the theories put out on the news this morning. Sounds like the pilot and all did a great job.

Apparently one of the ground crew who first saw the pilot after the the landing said "He looked a little white." Laughing Surprised

If the pilot of the 777 ''looked a little white,'' guess what the pilots of these aircraft were when they all landed safely!

[quote="Uncle Joe"]If the pilot of the 777 ''looked a little white,'' !

White I bet he was ,I'll also bet there is no procedure for both engine failure 1 min before you land ! quite a unique crash this one.

There are things that impress me about this landing. First, that the Captain admitted that he wasnt the handling pilot. True honesty, I think. The fact that the pilot stayed so cool, and did his job.

I dont know the procedure for landing passenger aircraft, but when landing on aircraft carriers, the pilot gives the engine full throttle in case of mishaps. Dont ask how I know this!

I'm really looking forward to hearing what actually happened when the reports are made. That is going to be interesting.

Then there are a couple of things that I wonder about. Will the pilot get mentioned in a honours list? There was a WW2 war hero, by the surname Coward. I wonder if they are related? Will the 777 be put back into service? And as trouble never comes alone, will this happen again? Boeing have had a bit of a reputation of being reluctant to modify their designs in the past...
