Trawling through some copies of Motor Service & Repairs from the 30s I found a couple of good tips.
I have always found that getting tyres unstuck from the rims is the most difficult part of pucture repair. I usually resort to puting the tyre flat on the ground and running over it with the front offside wheel of my car. However
another way according to Motor Service & Repairs is to put the tyre flat on the ground and pour petrol around the wheel/tyre interface and leave it for a minute or two.

also never chuck away (ie dispose of in a respectable and conscientious manner) old fuel, as it is great for scrubbing up oily old parts in. Also mix in a drop with old oil before spraying it under a car, it helps it to flow into nooks and crannies better, then evaporates off leaving a nice oily film
