I just came across this but hadn't been aware of the horrific true, behind the scenes, ending to the film.

Hi
If you ever see the film again, you will find that at the end, there is only one short, distant shot of the aircraft in the air with the credits starting to roll and at the end of the credits is a dedication to the pilot mentioning his death during the filming.

Incidentally the remake is not bad either, with Denis Quaid, Giovanni Ribisi plays a very spooky Elliot

Yes, the re-make wasn't bad but I liked the Jimmy Stewart one better, especially at the engine starting sequence where the little German "aircraft designer" says "I forbid you to fire a cartridge just to clean out the cylinders."

They missed that out of the re-make.

The original is one of my favourite films - the moment when Hardy Kruger tells Jimmy Stewart that he is a MODEL plane designer is one of those all time greats.

Did you see in the film that the pilot had left the ground after a bounce when the fuselage broke behind the wings, causing the crash? So not pilot error.

I must recommend the book. I read it long before I heard of the film, and had to break off for drink between each chapter as I seemed to be dying of thirst with them. That IS good writing.
I never could understand the anti-climactic ending to the film, now I know and it's very sad.

Always a sucker for emotional engine starts, I see someone has actually put my favourite scene on YouTube:

Sorry Brian I can't find the section where the designer reveals all but I do agree it was another excellent part.

I also failed in searching for another emotional start up on YouTube, namely the moment when Nick Grace first starts the engine of the Spitfire he rebuilt from parts. He describes how the massively powerful Merlin just throws the little Spit. around like a rag doll. Great (tear jerking) stuff!

Well I rummaged in my own video collection and put a clip of Nick Grace on YT.

Nick Grace bought the 2 seat Spitfire in 1979 as a kit of parts and after 5 years of work took off with his wife Carolyn on their first flight. Tragically he was killed in a car accident in 1988 but his widow continues to fly OUV.

I was sent this photo after discussing the movie with some friends.

All I know is that the guy on the far right was called Jimmy Martin and he was a driver for the movie company. He is said to have told people that apparently the pilot was catapulted forward through the propellor as the aircraft hit the ground.

Here is the bit on You-tube that the film makers left out in the remake.

Starting the engine.... who can ever have watched the original and forgotten this.

I forgot to add the start engine link.
