2 things, try a short length of chain instead of gravel etc. Secondly it may be a good candidate for an electrolysis bath, that's where the one off my P4 is going.

I cleaned mine out with an industrial vacuum cleaner.
Stuck the end in to a corner, up ended the tank to that corner a block of wood rattled on the tank for a couple of minutes then washed out with parafin.
Looked quite clean but time will tell when the car is back on the road.

Well thanks very much for all your ideas.
I have got the tank off so will insert a length of chain and rotate it for a while to dislodge the rust, I will replace the tank and insert the magnet for any remaining residue and if necessary insert an inline filter.
Thanks folks once again.

Sounds ok so long as there is no recent fuel vapour still in there, I've heard of tanks going up when a spark from the vac's motor meets the vapour.

WOW! Where do I remember reading of the incident where a chap vacuumed out his tank and burnt out his garage, his car and almost his neighbours!

I'm not sure about industrial vacuum cleaners, but normal domestic ones pass the incoming air over the (generally sparking) motor to cool it. WHAM!

Hardly recommendable I would think!

Jim

Apology Rick. I have just clicked "edit" to add this bit. We must have been typing our response at the same time! But I think a repeat can't do any harm.

Sorry forgot to mention
The tank had been empty for about 30, or more, years

I should have mentioned, make sure the tank is purged of any fumes.

Serk Marston do a good job on fuel tanks and not too expensive. They clean insides with chemicals.
Try them for a price
