Here is a question that someone might know. I have a 1988 toyota starlet, not a classic just yet but getting that way. This morning i knocked the wire off the temp sender. When looking at the wire closely i noticed a resister that had snapped in two. I then placed the wire on the sender mounted on the engine then found the gauge nolonger worked. So i removed the resister and placed the lucar back on the switch. I then noticed the temp gauge go up to the top. Can i assume that the resister is there to regulate the resistance from the temp sender. It doesn't look like a standard part, or has someone put the wrong temp sender in and has had to put a resister in line to regulate it... help.

Does the resistor have any lettering or colour bands on it?

It may well be there to limit the current. Bypass it at your peril. Remember it is very important to keep the smoke inside the wires.

I suspect you might get more info on a forum specialising in more modern vehicles.

Here's a link to someone who appears to know something of the Japanese wiring mysteries: http://www.toyotagtturbo.com/forums/showthread.php?32170-Jap-Spec-Starlet-Wiring-Diagrams

In the third diagram down he has translated it from the kanji but it doesn't appear to show anything other than the temperature sensor which is shown as a resistor.

Thanks all. Ity's not as basic as my A30, but close. I have been to toyota today who were as much help as chocolate T pot. I have now purchase a new resistor, which makes the gauge operate properly. But i'm a believer in keeping every thing as it come out of the factory..

I have owned her just over two years. I'll up load some pictures for you all but this may take sometime as i havent got a clue how to do this. It's had two owners and has covered 65000 miles. I love it to bits. I have been lucky enough to own some wonderfull cars in my time, from a 69 Dodge Charger to a r33 nismo nissan skyline. But they don't give me the same smile as the Austin does.[img
