Interesting archive of photographs of fires from the 1930's onwards, many having period fire appliances and every so often nice shots of vehicles caught up in the drama.
The discovery of an early 1960's Vauxhall Victor complete with a senior officers "acorn" blue light and what appears to be a duo-tone colour scheme, perhaps even red & white was for me particularly pleasing.

Hi John,
No, I missed it bar the last 5 minutes, however I'm sure its the same programme the BBC put on last year when it was the 50th anniversary, which I did see.
I worked with many of the firemen who were there and to hear their stories would have you hair standing on end - especially when the walls blew out and they had to run for their lives. Sadly, as many of us know 19 men didn't escape.
A fitting tribute to those men lost - and to those who risked their lives attempting to save their friends. |

Very evocative of the period.
The fire pictures are very atmospheric but I really liked this one...
This sectioned Wolseley is pretty impressive too!

Re the Wolseley photograph - forgive me Peter if you knew this, however what many people don't know is up until the fairly recent past fire brigades in the UK didn't have Road Rescue Units or even the remit for traffic accident rescue that we are all so familiar with nowadays.
Right up until the late 1950's the Police had contracts with local recovery companies to attend road accidents as being their only means of opening up accident damaged vehicles. Apparently it was common for an old wrecker to turn up, shackle chains to the car and an "immovable object" and then carefully(!) pull the car apart to rescue its trapped occupants. |

This is not far from where I live and we can see the factory - my late grandad worked at the place in the last war and was in the NFS - he did attend a number of fires there and may be in the picture - it was always going up - sawdust can spontaneously ignite.
The firm is still going - did the upholsrered furniture for the Titanic and Queen Mary!

It is an "Airline" but not by SS. There were several manufacturers attracted by this styling at the time. I wondered if it might be a Talbot.
